Mastering the pause

That Pause! Practising it is critical. So, can you slow down and
pause before you reach for food, and ask yourself "Is this the
best way to care for myself?"

I've started pausing to break the mindless eating cycle. It
really helps- the pause and question, "Is this the best way to
care for myself?"
I'm tired of struggling and come to see that I deserve a bit
better. I find when I pause that it helps me reconnect with
myself instead of disconnecting and turning to food. Never
realised how disconnected I am from myself! Pause, pause, pause-
going to do more of that! J

This week I've been pausing more and asking myself "is this
hunger or habit?" I think you can guess the answer!

Hey All,
your posts are so positive. Thank you - you are helping my
motivation to keep on pausing!
I do try to pause before reaching for food and I have to admit
its quite hard to remember to do it. But will keep trying.
I've also realised that I feel uncomfortable even asking myself
why I'm reaching for food.
However, I did have a small victory of sorts today, this
morning I went to the cupboard for some crisps and asked myself
why I felt I needed to eat them. I put the bag away and left
the kitchen without having any. So a tiny little victory for
now. I then spoilt it all by having chocolate with my lunch!

Hi Naz & Clare,
Pausing more and reminding yourself to slow down and make more
deliberate choices takes a lot of practice and patience. Dont
feel that you have to have your mindfulness button switched on
all of the time! Eating habits take time to break, and sometimes
its only after the packet of biscuits is demolished that we
think I should have paused before eating! Sometimes it can
help to use visuals to remind you. Some people find it helpful
to put a post-it notes on the kettle or cupboard to rennin them
to Pause: Am I really hungry?
Even 1 small victory is important because it reminds you that
you CAN pause and slow down, and you know how good it can feel.
1 step at a time!
Bernadette.

Here's a tip to help you pause before eating. A visual reminder
can be really good, such as a bright post-it on your kitchen
cupboard or fridge. It can really help be more aware instead of
just sinking into the usual habits.

I find the pause really calming and helpful. It makes me stop
and think, instead of shovelling food in. What a change!
