| Oscars Watch Party | |

| ** | |
| Setting this up now cuz my sister just made a date with me to | |
| watch together (in our own homes, but connected via Zoom/Phone), | |
| and I figure that this is one of those things that's big enough | |
| that a lot of people will watch and may want to chat about. It's | |
| all on the table - commenting on the dresses, the presenters, | |
| the musical acts, the winners, the speeches, who should have | |
| won. Let's have some fun! | |
| ** | |
| If you (like the rest of us) didn't watch a lot of new movies | |
| this past year - since when has that ever stopped us from having | |
| an opinion?? | |
| Get started now with your predictions based on your general | |
| sense of the things you've seen and those you haven't.... | |
| https://abc.com/shows/oscars/news/nominations/oscar-nominations-2022-list | |
| I'll kick off with Encanto will win for Score, and may be | |
| outdone in Animated Film by Flee for the originality of the type | |
| of story that Flee is and the subject it covers. Encanto is, by | |
| all standards an excellent film. But Flee is groundbreaking. The | |
| ground that Encanto breaks is important... but it's a current | |
| culture/environment kind of small achievement comparative to the | |
| watershed moment of the creativity of telling the story of Flee | |
| in this manner (which is, of course, exactly the kind of thing | |
| that the Academy is so in love with. Well... except that they | |
| are also in love... in the way that an industry thrives on the | |
| pressure of powerful pockets can be... with Disney). | |

| I have seen two of the best picture nominees, "West Side Story" | |
| and "Dune". I thought Spielberg did very well with the remake | |
| of "West Side Story", but it was just okay for me. "Dune" was | |
| excellent! I was as disappointed as most by the first movie. | |
| It wasn't all bad, but it wasn't as great as it could have been | |
| and was mostly disappointing. The new version is everything I | |
| wanted from the first movie and didn't get plus so much more, | |
| and it was only half of the story. I am impressed. And, the | |
| music by Hans Zimmer is incredible. I have to download that | |
| soundtrack. | |

| I love Lynch's Dune for the gloriously awful mess that it is. I | |
| honestly haven't seen a thing that would get me to watch the new | |
| one. Something about a Paul Atreides that looks like he stepped | |
| out of a Tim Burton animated film rubs me the wrong way (yes, I | |
| know this guy is well regarded, has been in films that are well | |
| regarded, and the like). He's very pretty; I just can't buy him | |
| as the Kwisatz Haderach. Yes, I'm difficult to please, and see | |
| fewer than one new film a year on average. | |

| I watch Lynch's "Dune" like I watch the Governator | |
| (Schwarzenegger) version of "Conan the Barbarian" and | |
| "Highlander", which is with love for how bad they are in some | |
| ways, but still entertaining enough I want to watch them anyway. | |
| James Earl Jones becoming a giant snake, "Dune" with loads of | |
| acting and directing chops but a legit large scale disaster of a | |
| film (not "Waterworld", but something like that), Connery saying | |
| "There can be only one" in "Highlander", a priceless film | |
| moment- all of those things are big fun for me. I suppose it | |
| may be that I like a big budget but poorly executed miss as much | |
| as a B-ish or indie film that becomes a beloved cult classic? | |

| I absolutely love her, and I am not even a movie watcher! But I | |
| love clothing (I sew my own clothes) and she always looks | |
| fabulous! | |
| And for the record, I don't wear fancy clothes. I just love | |
| beautiful fabrics and I like to make clothing that fits me. | |

| We didnt it like Dune. Not at all. | |
| We also didnt care for Power of the Dog, although the ending | |
| wasnt bad. | |

| She always looks beautiful to me. I appreciate the clothes even | |
| though I'm not fancy. My mother is a gifted seamstress. She | |
| made extra money sonetimes by making bridal gowns and | |
| bridesmaids dresses. I didn't learn to sew, but I helped her | |
| with the process, mostly pinning patterns and cutting the | |
| pieces. Sometimes I would start pinning the pieces together for | |
| her, depending how complex the pattern. I have some idea what | |
| takes to make formal dresses. I watch "Say Yes to the Dress" | |
| too. Why do I feel embarrassed every time I own watching that | |
| show? | |
