A brief tutorial - Site Conventions

While the site does have a bunch of dedicated
categories/boards, you are NOT required to post the things that
fit those categories there. They are there for the convenience
of posting things that you want to be able to navigate back to
later and have a conversation that may span days rather than
hours.
For the Daily Thread of the Day, LabPartner generally starts
this thread at midnight and posts the links and summaries for
the advice columns we like to read (not gift links, sorry, but
too many to do that for and Lab does excellent summaries).
Across the site, there is generally no such thing as
off-topic, but in some of the dedicated threads - particularly
the ones on more serious subjects - we do ask that you exercise
discretion about not changing the subject or moving off-topic
there. The Daily Thread is always a free for all and everything
is on-topic even if it's off-topic.
On Hax Chat days, Animaniactoo (Moi! Moi!) will post a
Calendar Event (accessible from the Calendar in the top
navigation bar) to a discussion thread with a gift link to the
Friday chat. Discussion for the chat happens on that thread,
and/or in our own live chat which can be accessed by hitting the
"Chat" button on the top navigation bar. Abiding Dude is the
regular Bartender. Muskrat is in charge of Snax.
Because we can get GIF heavy and the gifs can be a problem for
some people who have visual motion issues, we do ask that if
you're quoting something with a series of flashy gifs in their
post/the quote chain, you edit out as many as you can from your
own re-posting of them. The migraine-trigger people, etc. thank
you for your efforts on this front.
Note: This is not saying don't have fun with the GIFs - we love
the GIFs, GIFs are fun!... just please help keep them from
overwhelming the discussion.
Every now and then something will be suggested as a change or
new thing. If there's support for it, or it seems like something
reasonable/doable to Animaniactoo, she will generally put up a
poll and discussion for that thing so that it is a group
decision as much as possible for how this space is shaped and
operates. Do not assume an option you don't like on the poll
won't be popular with other people... speak up/vote or
(forever-ish) hold your peace.
Because all the mods here are volunteers who are also just
regular members of the forum who participate as themselves, the
mods will distinguish when they are speaking in Official Mod
Voice rather than just as regular old themselves by using maroon
text for Official Messages.
