Light flavored Asian dressing recipes?
By: MidwestmikkiJ Date: October 29, 2025, 7:05 pm

Anyone have a recipe for a fairly light flavored Asian dressing.
One of the few salad kits I buy is an Asian one. I can easily
recreate everything but the dressing. Generally when Ive tried
or tried to buy a commercial one they are too strongly flavored.
Mr J really likes the salad, as do I, but I dont like buying
the kits all the time.

I'll take a look. What basic flavors are in the one you are
trying to recreate?

The primary ingredients are oil vinegar, pineapple juice which I
cant taste so Im assuming its just a sweetener, sesame, and
rosemary. Its likely rice vinegar but it doesnt specify that.

So maybe the sesame (oil?) and/or the rosemary is overpowering
it? Doesn't sound like there is a lot of soy sauce, which I
usually have to cut back in things.
Turns out I don't have a lot of asian dressings that I've
actually tried yet. And the ones I've bookmarked look like they
won't hit the lightness you are looking for. Sorry, I couldn't
be of much help.
Oh, wait. Is the sesame in the form of tahini? I find that could
make a dressing seem heavy. Here's a gift link to an option
from Cooks Illustrated. It's more of a vinaigrette, and minus
the chili sauce might hit the notes you are looking for. Sorry.
I'm surprised I didn't have more ideas to offer.

Thanks, that looks worth trying. I'd leave out the chili sauce
since what I'm trying to do isn't at all spicy but it should be
close especially if I add the soy sauce a bit at a time.
It doesn't have to be perfect but close would be nice. So many
recipes have a much stronger flavor.

It sounds like you might be looking for Sesame-Ginger dressing.
I don't have a recipe, but the ingredients/flavor profile that
I'm familiar with sound like it could be in the territory of
what you're looking for, or able to adapt to it.

throwing this out fyi.
my sis just made this carrot ginger dressing (not the whole
salad). i got to taste it: it reminds me of restaurant fare.
https://cooking.nytimes.com/recipes/1023298-crunchy-greens-with-carrot-ginger-d…
notes: many commenters advised to skip the olive oil and sub a
neutral oil instead. some also recommended par-boiling the
carrot which makes it easier to blend (sis did both). instead
of onion powder, sis used quarter of chopped onion.
sis also skipped the tsp sugar but did do a drizzle of sesame
oil.

Rosemary is pretty strong, maybe skip that.
My daughter was on an Asian and Asianish food kick for a while,
for vinegar she'd always use rice vinegar. I like it too, it
seems more subtle.

One more thought:
Use a lighter oil (I don't know what your using) like sunflower?
