| More city wildlife | |

| A month or so ago I posted the picture of the ribbon snake that | |
| got into our house and I eventually managed to encourage it out. | |
| A week or more back I talked about the chicken that just moved | |
| into our front yard (no one has claimed her yet). Last week my | |
| husband mentioned seeing a roadrunner back by our shed, but said | |
| it flew away before he could get his camera out. I won't say I | |
| didn't believe him, but, well, he's not the strongest at | |
| identifying birds. | |
| So today as I was filling the water bowl we leave out for the | |
| squirrel (Sploot), I looked up and the roadrunner was standing | |
| on my fence, watching me. He was panting -- it's been dry here | |
| so I know a lot of birds come to use all the dogs' waterbowls | |
| (we have 7 bowls in the yard) for drinks. I think he was, too. | |
| So here's our latest wild visitor: | |

| Oh, for --! It's right side up on my computer, but rotated | |
| here. This one's pixelated because I zoomed rather than try to | |
| get too close. | |
| Here's one less zoomed in (but probably also upside down): | |

| Road runners are so cute. I saw them at the resort in Palm | |
| Springs when I stayed there with my sister. When they walk they | |
| streamline - their head goes forward and the little tuft on | |
| their head goes back and the tail feathers go straight back. | |

| Yesterday I was being scolded by the green jays for daring to be | |
| on my own back patio while Bess was eating. Roadrunner had come | |
| farther into our yard and I got a bit of footage of him. This | |
| morning he was hanging around the extra playroom (a converted | |
| back porch), probably checking for some of the fence lizards | |
| that hang around our house and yard. The dogs ignored him and | |
| he they until someone was in/walking past our front yard and the | |
| girls roared around the corner to bark at them. He zipped off, | |
| but they paid him about as much attention as they do the cats. | |

| Well, we no longer have the chicken. She foolishly got into the | |
| back yard this morning and the dogs roughed her up. I saw the | |
| feathers and called in the dogs, then Mr Tacha and I walked the | |
| yard looking for her. We didn't see her and let the dogs back | |
| out and heard her clucking. Called the dogs back in and this | |
| time actually could spot her. There's dead Johnson grass back | |
| along the fence and shed, and she was burrowed down in there. | |
| I give the dogs credit -- they came in very quickly when I | |
| called them away from her. We covered her with a towel and | |
| bunged her into a cat carrier and called our friend with the | |
| chickens. He came over and checked her out -- we all agree that | |
| she was just scared and lost a bunch of feathers, so he took her | |
| home to go live with his chickens. (We wanted Max to get her | |
| anyway; we just couldn't catch her before this happened.) | |
| We are relieved. We do like Margaret, and it was fun to have | |
| her come greet us in the morning as we went out the front door, | |
| but this is much safer for her. Max has a chicken run that is | |
| fully enclosed with wire to keep his flock safe. Margaret will | |
| spend a week or so in the run but in a kennel about the size of | |
| a rabbit hutch before she can join the rest of the flock. | |
| Here's Margaret before the great backyard disaster: | |

| This was when we first noticed her back in October. She's | |
| actually filled out a fair bit more since then. | |
