| Cat deterrence question | |
| By: Lurknomore Date: August 24, 2025, 4:19 pm | |
| --------------------------------------------------------- | |
| Sorry so long, not trying to be Hax or anything | |
| I love all animals but am mostly a dog person. And a birder. I | |
| watch, feed, provide water, photograph, and paint them. Im new | |
| to this urban neighborhood and my nice next door neighbor has 2 | |
| cats. Theo, a tuxedo cat, is friendly and lovable. And a very | |
| agile killer of birds. 😢 | |
| He has a cat door and is mostly out. His owner told me he | |
| brought her a dead bird a while back. I replied that I love | |
| birds but knowing this, I will stop filling my bird baths or | |
| feeding them, as I dont wish to bait the birds for Theo! and | |
| she just nodded. I mentioned a little bell I used for my long | |
| ago kitty. It fell on deaf ears. | |
| Now Theo is using my new raised beds as litter boxes. So I want | |
| to repel Theo but not hurt him. Im trying sweet gum balls from | |
| our rural place on the soil, lemon, vinegar, coffee grounds, | |
| etc. in the vicinity. I plan to put chicken wire over my beds | |
| and plant more densely elsewhere. (I dont want to use pepper as | |
| it can hurt animals if they get it on their paws and then | |
| scratch their eyes.) Any other ideas? | |
| Happily, I can still feed hummingbirds, and some, the Annas, | |
| are here year round. But i don't want cat turds in my garden. We | |
| do plan to adopt a dog once we get more settled and finally sell | |
| our other house if economy ever allows that! A dog will help. | |

| They say citrus peels are a good deterrent, but I had a cat who | |
| adored citrus fruit and would come running from the other end of | |
| the house as soon as I stuck my fingernails into an orange or | |
| grapefruit peel. | |
| Motion sensing sprinklers just in the beds themselves? But | |
| again, I had a couple of cats who would join me in the shower, | |
| so.... | |

| There are deterrent sprays, but you have to keep reapplying, | |
| especially when it rains. | |
| Sorry youre going through this. I assume a tall fence is not in | |
| the budget. | |

| Mr just got some cat deterrent thingys from Amazon. They're | |
| about 18 inches/2 feet or so long about 4 inches wide, with | |
| little spikes about an inch high. You can cut them down. Mr is | |
| putting them in his fig pots. Honey started peeing in the pots. | |
| An entire yard of mostly nothing and she goes in a pot. Mr put | |
| stakes across the tops but she's ignoring those now. These are | |
| more aggressive. I'll try to attach a picture. I left the glass | |
| to kinda show scale. | |

| Ooof. | |
| I remember seeing a fence topper that angle from the top so they | |
| can climb up but then meet a little ceiling. But it depends on | |
| your fence material, I think. | |
| I googled Cat fence barrier. The link was 3 pages long. | |
| Heres a pic of 2 types. I considered adding something like | |
| these if our current Mia Containment Methods didnt work. | |
| But these would have to extend over your neighbirs side, at | |
| least slightly. | |

| I do not see using that on the sofa as in the lower left | |
| picture. When I want to sit on my couch, I want to just plop | |
| down, not have to remove a bunch of caltrops. But for the | |
| garden, sure. | |

| Yup. And my sofa is my cats' sofa. They belong on my sofa! | |
| (I didn't see that pic - pulled it up on my phone and just | |
| didn't focus on that dumb idea. 😁) | |
