When did American football change?

Watched the KC/Buccaneers (Tampa stills?) game with my BIL last
night, not because either DH or I care at all about football,
but because he wanted to watch it and we had nothing better to
do. I haven't seen pro football on TV (or IRL, to be honest)
since before my father walked out on us. I remember it being a
game of basically Mack trucks dog-piling each other as the ball
crept excruciatingly slowly across the field.
One guy looked a little heavy. The rest were skinny dudes that
may well have been smaller than some of the HS football players
at my former HS. The pads have shrunk (and did they need to).
The helmets are different. The mouth guards look more like
brightly colored pacifiers or those things you put on your teeth
at night if you grind your teeth. There was a lot less
butt-patting among players. And the cheerleaders were in track
suits, not sexy outfits. What you saw of them. We only got a
few glimpses.
Howard Cosell was not nattering on. Instead we get three guys
looking a bit uncomfortable in suits who just cannot shut up.
Couldn't hear the calls the ref made because they're busy
telling us about something someone did in a totally different
game three weeks ago.
We kept getting slightly bitter commentary from in-house, as one
of the players had just been traded from TN to KC in exchange
for a draft pick. Lots of "You're welcome, KC" from the rocker.

I think the network matters. Monday Night Football is really
ESPN but the NFL "lets" ABC air it. The rule changes are
significant from the days of Howard Cosell. I usually watch
football on Fox because that's who airs the 49ers games. I think
Fox and CBS have better announcers. That may just be my personal
opinion because I'm used to them.
It is annoying when they get hooked on hearing themselves talk
and fail to call the game as it's happening. That still happens.

NFL linemen average 6'5", 314 pounds, so I'm not sure they're
really smaller. The helmets are different because the players
union is finally waking up to the fact that concussions are bad
and CTE significantly shortens their lifespans. Over the years,
the rules have evolved to protect quarterbacks and receivers a
lot more, so the devastating open field hits have almost
disappeared. It also leads to more passing and more scoring.
Buck and Aikman suck as announcers. If the Mannings aren't on, I
mute the sound and play music on youtube.

Have you seen a tush push play yet?

Well, damn, all the videos I tried were blocked, unless you
click on "watch on YouTube"
Apparently "the tush push was illegal in the NFL until 2005,
when the league removed pushing from the prohibited actions. Now
it's only a penalty to pull or carry the ball carrier."

Oh, yeah. They did a couple of those during the game we
watched. But at least they have stopped patting each other's
bottoms when they're all lined up to start the action.
The tush push makes some kind of sense, though. When you're
trying to help your guy make a couple of inches on the field
while they're trying to stop the same thing, giving them a good
shove from behind like that seems helpful.

I don't think the addition of Tom Brady to the commentators list
has improved matters.

He's not bad for a rookie. As he goes along, he'll get better as
he gets less self-referential.

Will he? The man is not warm, not funny, not fun.

And the way he'll belabor a point makes me want to mute him. I
thought John Madden was annoying to listen to. Only because Tom
hadn't been born yet.
