Help please! Scary cat behavior
By: nsw11 Date: July 30, 2024, 5:01 pm

I took the cats to the vet yesterday for their annual visit and
vaccines. Both cats were a little reserved yesterday but nothing
out of the ordinary. Today, I went into the office and got home
around two. Little Sis was sleeping on the couch. She woke up
with I got home and started screaming. She screams, hisses and
growls for several minutes (probably not as long as it seems),
then stops and either naps or goes quiet in a hiding place for
an hour or so, then does it again. No one is touching her or
near her, although she also does it if she sees someone.
Sometimes she looks like she is looking at something but there's
nothing there.
I called the vet's office and they said the vaccines affect some
animals like this but we've had a lot of cats and I've never
seen this reaction. Have any of you? So far, the only things
keeping me from taking her to the emergency vet is that I'm
afraid it will traumatize her even more and I don't think I
could get near her or get her in a carrier.

Oh no! I'm so sorry. I haven't experienced that with cats, but
I had a dog that had a reaction to a medicine that caused
temporary vision loss. He didn't growl but I could tell he
couldn't see and his pupils were dilated. He recovered, but my
vet didn't know if he would. I understand the dilemma of not
wanting to make things worse, my cat is traumatized every time I
take her to the vet. I really hope it isn't serious. Sending
my best feline mojo to your cat and extra mojo for you too.

I've never had that reaction although I had one cat that would
pretty much sleep for 24 hours.
I'd probably try to wait until tomorrow to see if she's better.
But I understand the impulse to take her to the emergency vet.
I've done that in the middle of the night.

And I have no experience with that, but sending mojo that it is
all resolved quickly and well.
Is it possible that she's having a double vision issue?
I may have known a cat once who was fed a hit of acid and then
would do outrageous things like charging at people's legs and
leaping off a 2nd story windowsill from a seated position. We
thought he was having flashbacks but Whittaker was later
diagnosed with double vision and he was seeing things coming at
him from too many directions. Could there be a temporary issue
with eyesight?

It does occur to me that you could try one of those calming
sprays if you have them. We occasionally used Flyway and it
sometimes seemed to help.

Thanks! We've had several that were sleepy and cranky and
clearly a little sore. But this is more extreme than anything
I've seen. She have this kind of reaction last year. Big Sis
doesn't know whether to be worried about her or scared of her.

We don't have any calming spray. We've never needed it. I don't
know if catnip would make it better or worse.

We had a weird, but lovable cat, who acted like yours when
nothing was wrong so we tried the diffusers for several years
and also had the spray for when she was in a room upstairs.
