I think the Olympics should do the gracious thing, and let
Chiles keep her bronze, then give the gals who came in 4th and
5th medals, too. It's not the gymnasts' fault that the judges
messed up, and said one of the other gymnasts had stepped out,
when she hadn't.
That's probably not the way this will be handled, though. It'll
drag out for months, and leave nobody happy.
The Americans have challenged the ruling that Chiles needs to
give her medal back, saying that a coach tried to challenge the
scoring of her routine twice before the time for challenges was
up.
Le sigh.

The problem with letting Chiles keep the medal is, what do you
do with the official records? They're still going to say that
Barbosu was third based on the tie-breaker; the other Romanian
gymnast was fourth; and Chiles was fifth. So you get to explain
that someone got a bronze medal for finishing fifth? The scores
were different; you can't change the records to indicate a tie
when no tie existed. Well, you could, I guess, but that's an
open lie.
Besides which, Chiles already has a gold medal from the team
competition. So it's not like she needs the medal as a souvenir
or anything.

BTW, compare gymnastics medal discussions with men's high jump.
Shelby McEwen of the US and Hamish Kerr of New Zealand flat
tied. Cleared the same height; missed the same height; same
number of missed jumps earlier in the competition. Two gold
medals? Nope. Jump it off. Kerr won; McEwen settled for a
silver. Haven't heard any complaints.

And there is plenty of precedent for athletes having their time
and medals taken away as a result of future drug tests. So they
need to follow whatever their procedure is.

They couldve had 2 gold medals. It happened in that event in
Tokyo. They chose to jump for it. Mutual decision.

It just wouldnt be a sport if there wasnt some outrage over a
judge call.

Okay, I'll be blunt. Remember that I spent about 15 years of my
life coaching/running girls' sports, and I have been a fan of
women's sports as long as I can remember. And I really don't
like the suggestions of "just pretend there was a tie and give
two or even three women bronze medals, so that nobody's feelings
get hurt." No, don't do that. If there was a tie that can't be
broken, okay - I can see multiple medals. But that wasn't the
case. There wasn't a tie for third that couldn't be broken. So
why are we talking about multiple medals?
The reference to the men's high jump was - people accept that
competitors wanted to break a tie and have a clear winner and a
second place finisher. So why are women's sports different? Why
do we have to give "participation bronze medals" so that we
don't hurt people's feelings?
