Politics section - open to viewed by guests or private only to u
s?
By: animaniactoo Date: July 15, 2024, 7:11 pm

Originally I set up the political section as open to viewing
because there were a lot of people who had still not
transitioned here and I wanted them to have a sense of how we
were structuring the forum and what kinds of discussions were
available and be able to see familiar names commenting. And did
not think that having only "fluffy" topics like food/pets/etc.
was necessarily a draw.
However, at least one member has expressed that they do not feel
comfortable commenting in the political section because they are
concerned about privacy in their real lives. And they would like
to have political discussions among people who can generally
keep such things civil and exchange thoughts.
Personally I also think that it can be useful to keep political
discussions out of the main thread of the day. It won't always
happen - especially with things like the events of this week,
they are too present in our lives to expect that they would be
kept solely in the Politics section. But it also allows for
continuing a discussion in a dedicated space vs continuing to
add to a previous day's thread. And finding responses to the
specific discussion.
So.... since the forum structure is based on input, I am asking
for input on how you would like to handle this section. Even if
your input is limited to a vote one way or the other.

I am in favor of making them members-only. Thanks.

For myself it doesn't matter too much, but I do want other
members to feel comfortable discussing politics.

Not knowing about the workings of the site, I can guess that
such fine control is not built in, but here is a suggestion:
The private boards seem to be completely hidden, so that guests
can't even tell that there is a Thread of the Day section. If it
were possible to show the names of the private boards without
allowing the contents to be visible, it would provide some of
the "advertising" function while allowing total privacy. An
even more sophisticated screen would be to allow guests to see
the names of the private sections and the titles of the threads
within, but not showing the names of those who start threads or
post to them.
Like kkt, I do not really worry about my identity being revealed
here -- but I do use the same handle on a few other sites and I
suppose it is best to err on the side of caution in case someone
gets riled up about something I say in one place and then tracks
me to others.

I don't have strong feelings either way. As long as there are no
politics in the Dear Cat, Dear Fido or Dear Human threads :D

If letting non-members know which topics are available only to
members is important, it'd be easy enough to post a query about
that in one of the open forums, and provide the relevant details
there.
I'm assuming there's no more sophisticated way to offer
non-members a "sneak peek."

Sorry for the delay in answering here.
No, there is no way to give a preview of thread titles.
The best we have is AD's "Hey You!" thread in the General
Discussion section that we can bump back to the top.

**Voting has closed, and the vote has gone strongly towards
limiting the politics section to members only.
The permissions have been changed and the politics section is
now only able to be viewed by members.**
