| Civil Debate vs Personal Attacks | |
| By: animaniactoo Date: September 22, 2023, 3:22 pm | |
| --------------------------------------------------------- | |
| I am posting this because we have had a number of incidents | |
| lately - I don't know if people are extra cranky with the change | |
| of seasons, change of traffic patterns with the start of back to | |
| school, or political climate. However... these incidents are not | |
| good for our community and I would like to nip this in the bud. | |
| So, this is a reminder about what constitutes disagreement | |
| versus personal attack. | |
| Please review our community rules: | |
| https://haxnuts.createaforum.com/site-policymoderation-info/community-rules-842/ | |
| And I am outlining what will hopefully clarify where some of the | |
| boundary lines are and framings that push things into one | |
| category or another. | |
| Civil - even passionate debate: | |
| "I disagree with X. This does not address the MULTIPLE instances | |
| of Y & Z" | |
| "I don't see it that way at all. In my experience...." | |
| "Ugh. This sounds like every time I've heard someone say | |
| "_______" and it comes across very dismissively" | |
| "I'm not sure if you're familiar with the statistics on this. | |
| According to ______ this is an issue because _______-. Here are | |
| a couple of references on this." | |
| "It doesn't ALWAYS have to mean X. Sometimes it means Y" | |
| Personal attack/Uncivil: | |
| "Yeah, clearly YOU don't see it that way because you are | |
| _________" | |
| "You need to learn that _________" | |
| "As an X, you don't get to have an opinion on this." | |
| "But I see you don't care about that." | |
| Name-calling that is not clearly in jest and ribbing between | |
| friendly adverseries (and yes, we can generally tell the | |
| difference. All of us). | |
| This is not to say that you can never address the other person | |
| directly, including some form of "You seem really dug in on | |
| this, and I'm wondering why? Other people are saying they have a | |
| different experience, and theirs is just as valid" | |
| But speak to the OPINION that you disagree with. Do not make | |
| holding that opinion about someone's overall character or | |
| extrapolate what else it must say about them. At least half the | |
| time you're likely to be wrong, and the other half the time, you | |
| are come across so strongly that they can't hear you. | |
| Please help to keep our community one where sensitive subjects | |
| can be discussed from various perspectives without alienating | |
| each other. | |
| Thank you | |

| I hope, what the hell when feeling a scootch of personal | |
| attack is okay. If not, feel free to modify or delete my posts | |
| as you see fit. | |

| As an expression of surprise, there shouldn't be an issue with | |
| it as long as the rest of the response is measured and not a | |
| reaction that escalates to the next level. | |
| However, I would like to remind - if you (general you) are | |
| relying on mods to modify/remove what is not okay, it is | |
| probably better to err on the side of caution. Seeing as this is | |
| a part-time volunteer gig for the mods and we cannot be relied | |
| on to be around to catch stuff before it escalates, etc. | |
