This is one of my favorite memories of Dakota:
8 years ago today, when we were at Owasippe Scout Reservation,
she spent over an hour one afternoon just fascinated by the
little fish swimming near the dock. These were tiny things,
maybe 2-3 inches long. There were quite a few of them, and they
just hung out near her. Here's a minute of that hour.

But did any of the fish wave back? Love the video.

Thinking about her and remembering her makes me happy, never
sad.

o that was a total mistake! i loved the vid and hit the wrong
button on my tablet when i wa lounging in bed earlier (duh).
i liked the part towards the end where shes thinking about
petting the fish by putting her paw in the water.

before getting out of bed in the morning, I'm usually checking
the weather on my tablet. I have a lot of tabs that I leave open
(nyt, spelling bee, here, etc) for easy access.
this am, I went through and closed a couple open tabs that I
don't need anymore: a recipe ill never make; a movie review;,
etc.
then I came across a short vid of Dakota in lake michigan in
summer. which I rewatched. and smiled.
that tab will stay open forever.

This one is from 9/13/2013, not 2 weeks after we got back to
Chicago and started to get used to each other.

I call it "My Pet Octopus." Dakota is in front (and under). Had
they ever not been moving, it wouldn't have been so blurry.

I almost told this story on the [member=6]Queenie[/member]
thread about her pup, but after I hijacked it to become a
travelogue, I figured I might as well bring it here. (I think
I've told it before since we started this place, but I can't
find it.)
This happened before I got Ziva. Dakota and I had been together
about a year and a half and hadn't been apart overnight before.
I drove from Chicago to DC for a funeral and then drove home for
a total time away of 57 hours. She was cared for by someone who
rented a room in my house. He fed and walked her, but she spent
most of her time in my part of the house (which was, of course,
her part of the house, too) She happened to be out of the room
when I got home. She was hanging out with her caregiver. The
caregiver knew, of course, because I texted him when I came in.
When I heard her coming toward my room, I sat on the floor. She
came through the door like Kramer, sliding in sideways and
coming to a full stop. She stood and looked at me for a good
10-15 seconds. Then she walked over and spent another 10-15
seconds sniffing me. All this before the next act, which was a
full minute of crawling into my lap and licking everything she
could reach.
