It's 3 years today. I miss her as much as ever.
Every once in a while, I think about that little tuft of grass.
A few weeks before she died, she found such delight in it. In
the 3 years since, no matter how long I go between mowing, that
little tuft of grass has never been there again. I'm so glad I
have the photo. It's the same one that appears in the first post
in this thread, and here it is again. I take delight in the joy
I see in her.

Thanks for sharing the photo, and your stories of Dakota with
us.
I understand how you feel. I still miss some of our furry family
members. It's good that we had them in our lives, it's good that
we remember and miss them.

Im so glad Dakota found joy in her life even up to the end.
That says a lot about you as well as Dakota.
I hope your great memories of her console you through the loss

❤️ I always am reminded of your loss today since I
was sad since it happened on my birthday. I'm so glad you had
each other to love.

Thank you for sharing Lab. I am happy Dakota still brings you
such joy with warm memories. They just keep on giving to us
forever, don't they.

Thankfully, neither of mine ever did that.
One time when we were on a walk, Dakota saw something in a yard
(probably a squirrel or a cat), and she jumped on a fence. She
ended up perched on it before I could grab her and put her down
on our side.
And she also figured out how to escape my sister's yard: walk up
the last few feet of downspout that aimed the rainwater toward
the grass; jump on the chain link fence; kick off the house with
her back legs; and free!. One time, my nephew hid in the yard,
and he said she was over in less than 10 seconds.

When I brought her home on August 26, 2010, no one at the
Chicago Humane Society told me that it was National Dog Day. I
don't know if that was because the first NDD was in 2004 or
because of this reality:
Every day is Dog Day.
Well, that's the truth for me, and it has been for 13 years now.

This showed up in my Facebook memories for November 8, 2012,
which was a Thursday. I looked up the weather: mid 40s and
overcast; a pretty decent beach day. We probably got there
somewhere around 10 AM. Dakota was 4; we'd been together for a
little over 2 years by then and going to Montrose Dog Beach for
about a year and a half.
There was a nice pack at the beach today, 6 or 7 dogs
that played well together (and humans who seemed to get along
well enough). About 45 minutes in, I asked Dakota if she wanted
to go for a walk, which means going down the length of the beach
to the south end (and then back, of course). But we never left.
We stayed almost an hour more before I was ready to leave.
I started to head to the gate, but Dakota had another idea. She
headed south along the beach and wouldn't even consider coming
to join me. She had a good ball that she likes a lot, and she
would drop it and then take off running when I picked it up. She
ran south until we made it almost all the way to the end of the
beach. The next time I picked up the ball, she headed back
north. When we made it back to the main part of the dog beach,
she went straight to the gate without a fuss.
I know she doesn't speak English. I'm pretty sure that she
doesn't understand English (beyond one or two words). I am
absolutely certain that she knows exactly what she wants, and I
have no trouble at all giving it to her whenever I can. She had
a very good day today.
Well, no doubt about it, I asked if she wanted to go for a walk.

I disagree, Lab. They understand a lot of words. We used to have
to spell out some words around my childhood dog, and I think he
was starting to understand that, too.
Some even understand more Spanish than I do! 🤣
Thanks for sharing more memories of dear Dakota.
