Should the Government do more to help the UK games industry?
By: GamerDad Date: August 19, 2011, 5:55 am
---------------------------------------------------------
"TIGA fully agrees with the Parliamentary Committee that the
case for Games Tax Relief needs to be reviewed by the Coalition
Government saying that it is a high tech, highly skilled and
export oriented industry that is a very important factor in
Rebalancing the UK economy. Dr. Richard Wilson, TIGA CEO,
commented on the report:
The Committee has recognised that there are compelling
arguments for Games Tax Relief; dismissed the Governments
claim that Games Tax Relief was poorly targeted; criticised the
Government for failing to consult with the industry;
demonstrated that it is absurd for the Government to support the
Film Tax Credit but not Games Tax Relief; acknowledged that the
UK video games industry is not competing on a level playing
field; that the games industry needs targeted Government
support; and that the current R&D tax credits should be
improved.

Damn right VG producers in britain should get tax relief. We
could very well be a leading light in the Industry as a nation,
a lot of the best known figures in game development are from the
UK.

There is absolutely zero chance of tax relief being introduced
into the gaming industry. The one that is prevalent in the film
industry was introduced many years ago, and I think the current
gvmt will look at phasing this out. At the end of the day gaming
is like any other industry and don't see why it should get tax
benefits over say a manufacturing company which is in drastic
decline in the UK. Theme parks have been lobbying the gvmt for
years trying to get the VAT reduced to 5% on admissions. The
argument being that it will increase visitors and thus more
jobs. However they have no chance, despite probably having spent
over 250k on lobbying fees in the last 5 years !! Once the gvmt
do it for one industry they will set a precedent and others will
try and follow suit. Especially in the current climate, the gvmt
is looking at ways to increase tax revenues to reduce the
deficit, not reduce their tax revenues.

Tax breaks are not the answer. But I'd be in favour of
encouraging, through grants or loans, innovation and new
enterprises.
I'd love to see some of the, quite genius, indie games on XBL
given the boost and support to take the next step. However, once
they're there, they shouldn't treated any different than other
manufacturers.

So instead of tax relief should there be some kind of help for
aspiring programmers etc?

Yes - that is a more realistic proposition. The govmt ran a
scheme called the Graduate Intern Scheme, which basically meant
that companies could recruit a graduate, and the gvmt picked up
their wages for up to the first 6 months. This way the company
could get get some valuable resource for free, whilst the
graduate a) hoped they would be offered a job and b) at the very
least got some work experience that they would not have had.
This scheme was (and maybe is still) a great success. Our
company took on a graphic designer and an animated this way.
Also grants to companies in the creative industries that provide
work experience / jobs etc for up and coming programmers etc
would also work (similar to above)
