RACE REPORTS & PREVIEW - Qantas Australian Grand Prix

---------------------------------------------------------
2012 FORMULA 1 QANTAS AUSTRALIAN GRAND PRIX
ALBERT PARK - RACE START - 16/10/2012 - 6PM A.E.S.T.
Set around the man-made Albert Park Lake, the circuit utilises a
combination of public roads and purpose-built track to create a
bumpy circuit containing short, fast straights and sixteen slow
to medium speed corners. Albert Park is known as a high-speed
track where cars regularly reach speeds in excess of 300 kph/185
mph. This makes it particularly hard on brakes.

Q: 2nd. 1.24.8. Did a 1.24 flat during the practice session
before the race. Set my car up for the wet so 8 tenths off my PB
wasn't bad. Moss's lap was very impressive!
R: 1st. Pretty boring & uneventful race. 1st lap I got the
braking wrong going in to T2 but managed to just keep position.
Every time I tried to push & set a fast lap I would lose the
back end but save it using the brake (2010 braking model). Out
braked myself a few times going into T2 during the race but that
seemed to be my only problem. Lost KERS after I lapped angryman
so couldn't pull away & I was actually holding him up so came in
for fresh tyres, Lap 16 I think. Lost KERS again with 4 laps to
go but at that time I had a 20+ sec lead. Back markers were
fantastic but I was really worried about angryman behind me
during that stint. Glad he didn't take me out. Got the bug back
again for F1 but I don't think I will be as quick for the rest
of the year as I pretty much spent all my time over the past few
weeks racing at Melbourne only. Congratulations to everyone that
finished. Only 1 DNF out of 13 is pretty good.

Q: 7th; well I just ruined my own qualifying session because out
of the 4 hot laps that I did, I was never closer than 1 seconds
behind Moussa in sector 1 ... I could not make any sense of it,
where he was finding all that time...it didn't seem possible. I
was a bit too hard on myself and wound up blowing up my engine.
R: 2nd; Got a decent start off the line and was right on
kartdude's ass all the way to turn 1, I had to swerve to avoid
Moussa who was stranded on the outside of T1.
The first few laps I was making so so so so so many mistakes:
spins/running into the grass/getting nervous about various cars
behind me with lag, so I had to really screw my head back on
straight again. Moss and Angry were both putting tons of
pressure on me, and when I spun after the fast chicane (I think
I did it 3 laps in a row) Moss got by me and Angry was always
within a car length. Finally I just let him by the next lap and
decided to do the following and he wound up losing it in the
fast chicane worse than me. I managed to catch up with Stubbs
and had a great battle with him until he spun off, then I was in
4th behind my teammate and Kartdude.
Middle part of the race, Moussa was about 15 seconds behind and
closing a second a lap on me, and then suddenly I was gaining
the time back, and closing in on supanash as well. I was able to
overtake supanash when he pitted and when livo pitted I was only
9 seconds behind...got the gap down to 6 sec and it was a cat
and mouse game from there .. i would gain some time, then he'd
gain it back, very good stuff. I made one or two mistakes as my
tires were wearing and the gap jumped up to 13 sec, supanash
still about 15 sec behind.
Towards the end of the race I approached the Mercedes duo, Angry
spinning off at T4, and then took me another whole lap to catch
Jon ... Jon seemed to pull over for me on the straightaway
heading down to turn 3, but then he hits me in the right rear on
the approach to turn 3 sending me into the gravel .... what the
hell was that for Jon? If you're gonna pull over, pull over
.... lost 12 seconds in both directions putting the gap to Livo
at 25 sec and supanash down to 5 sec behind me.
My focus turned from chasing Livo to defending my teammate who
was closing a few tenths per sector. On the second to last lap I
spun down at the exit of T13 and damaged my wing, and supanash
flies past me :'( :'(
The final lap was probably the craziest one i've ever had on
this game. Nash outbraked himself going into T3 so I followed
him to the outside of T4, but couldn't make it stick. I could
tell he saved his KERS for all the straightaways cus going down
to T8 he drove away, and managed to do so until he must've
missed the left at the start of S3, which messed him up for the
right so I was right on his back tire going down to T13, and
supanash stuffs it and goes right to the gravel trap!!! so I got
2nd back and took the spot, was really crazy stuff that one.
DOTD : Livo, you must've really been on your game dude. Really
wish I could've been up there with you.
Man I have got the braking down to a science in the dry, but in
the wet it is just so unpredictable. I was literally shaking at
every low speed corner thinking I was just gonna sail off into
the grass, especially at the start and end of the race. My pace
is remarkable I'm finding, I just need to work on the
consistency (the total opposite of what 2011 was like).
Moussa ... what was your deal? Did you just have a dry setup
that couldn't handle the wet conditions? You seemed to just be
missing really and I couldn't understand it .... was rather
surprising.
Maranello is scratching their heads as to who this zWoody guy
is, why did he have more pace than the #1 driver? The crew will
be having a sitdown over the week to discuss WHO is faster than
WHOM ..... and they'd better copy ;)
Great race guys.

q1st: i knew quali wasnt so important since we all knew it was
gonna rain in the race. had a setup that would be good for both
conditions. couldve done better in qualy but the lack of playing
f1 2012 put me behind abit.
r4th: i had a good start, a lil mistake on third gear but
managed to stay 1st until i made that stupid mistake on t1, i
missed my braking point, slipped right into the grass, lost
about 7 positions, so i started pushing hard till i gained back
a couple of positions until i lost control and broke my front
wing, then i was pushed back to 10th made some positions reached
3rd i think, but then again i made another mistake and lost my
front wing, so i pitted again and from there i was just trying
to drive safe and finish the race.
i was unreliable today, wasnt driving like im suppose to but
finishing 4th after all the drama was good result. if i hadnt
made that first mistake on t1 i wouldve drove carefully all
race.
dod is bettween andrew and livo, they both did a great job.

not really, i cant complain about my setup, it was just my
driving style, after i made my first mistake i was really
frustrated. i started pushing over the limits and that was the
problem. the only thing i had wrong in my setup is probably the
brakes, but other then that it was good.
when i got behind u u were 19 seconds, i shrinked it down to 12
but from there i was driving horribly, trying to go faster was
just not working, i was making mistakes consistently. but o well
its a long season so hopefully my good days will come :D

Q - 3rd. not happy with the lap. i have done 24's but havent
been able to pull it off in a league race. plus i cant get the
setup right. im just not confident in the car. its loose and
nervous and very understeery. but im happy with my pace in a
busted car. i will more then likely get stronger and find a
setup that suits me later in the season. when 2011 come out i
was a mid pack racer then by the end off the 1st season on that
game id found my feet.
R - 7th. This rain crap is a real drainer. i was almost bout to
quit after the 1st 10 laps but thought id stick it out because
im gunna need as much as possible rain practice as this game
sux, i just seem to have no brakes and grip in the wet. reminds
me of 2011 when i 1st started wet n/a driving. woeful
every time i got into a rythm i would catch the car in front.
pressure them into a mistake pass then make an error or smashing
my wings allowing them back thru. id made a mistake allwing
angry and drew thru early in the race and i managed to just keep
with them and they battled away n i capitolised on some small
errors. but then making my own i allowed them passed and lost
all confidence again. the car was a shag on a rock for a few
laps and i fuked my wing. pitting i had a stronger second stint
pumping out some decent on pace f'laps catching but i was in
10th. catching my team mate striker who was 20 secs ahead. it
took me 16 laps to get it down to sub 5 secs. and he was on top
on gazza. then i caught them really qwik but time was running
out. on lap 28 i get passed striker when he runs wide at t4 and
go to work on gazza i start getting little excited thinking if i
hold this together i will get him as i could see him struggling.
put to much throttle thru t2 losing it and letting striker back
thru. was the best part of the race im glad i finished it
because i felt i got better as the race went on. learning how
the brakes felt, tyres, fuel, throttle etc.
im hoping for a few dry races to come so everyone can push. well
done to the winner and podium sitters and pole sitter(moss thats
freaky fast)
