STSS - Japan - 2024 outbreak |

|
SUMMARY - The country of Japan is currently experiencing a spike |
|
in the cases of streptococcal toxic shock syndrome (STSS). The |
|
country reports 977 cases as of June 2nd of this year, as |
|
compared to 941 cases for the entirety of 2023. STSS is |
|
considered a complication of invasive group A streptococcal |
|
disease (iGAS). iGAS, itself, is a severe form of what is |
|
commonly referred to as "strep throat." STSS has a 30% mortality |
|
rate and is considered a "flesh-eating bacteria" due to its |
|
ability to destroy body tissue (called 'necrosis'). A suspected |
|
cause for the rise in cases is the relaxation of Covid-19 |
|
restrictions in the country. The World Health Organization (WHO) |
|
has not yet recommended any travel restrictions to the country. |

SUMMARY - Facial masks are returning to Ninoy Aquino |
|
International Airport in the Philippines as the MIAA (Manila |
|
International Airport Authority) is advising travelers while |
|
inside of the airport to wear them in order to arrest the spread |
|
of an outbreak of Streptococcal Toxic Shock Syndrome (STSS) that |
|
is emanating from the country of Japan. That outbreak is |
|
currently listed as having 1,109 cases within the first six |
|
months of this year (2024). |
