Axle Plates
By: uncantim Date: December 14, 2025, 7:00 am

Hey chums, I need your collective genius please.
I sat looking at my rear axle set-up yesterday, including the
axle plates I bought from Gemini Karts. I understand that these
axle plates are meant to be fixed in a landscape position
(picture 1), but can anybody think of a reason I cannot weld
them in a portrait position(picture 2)?
It doesn't appear to make any difference to the height of the
axle from the chassis, and I intend to add bracing as well.
My thinking is that the axle may be easier to extract if the
openings in the plates are facing backwards, and there are more
options for welding in the portrait position.
Let me know your thoughts.
As always, your advice is greatly valued.

Hi Tim, my preference is to place them so the axle can easily
come out of the chassis rearwards. Generally, if the axle needs
to be raised vertically to remove it, the engine is often on the
way.
I generally use parts cut off a doner go-kart, so I have to
consider the brake caliper mounting as well. Consequently, the
caliper/axle mount is generally "landscape" as you describe it,
whilst the other end is "portrait". A little bit more difficult
to remove the axle, but still possible without having to remove
or move the engine.

Hey Ian
Yes, I got the idea from you in the first place.
I can't use the brackets from the donor kart as my chassis rails
are not parallel, so I had to go for the offset triangular clamp
that go with the Gemini brackets. The engine is potentially
going to be in the way if I have to remove the axle, so I wanted
to avoid that upfront.
My brake discs are on the outside of the chassis, and I'll have
to make separate brackets for those.
