| 18lbs valve springs | |

| 18 lbs valve springs installation. If you have an engine with | |
| collet type valve retainers this may help you. Valve spring | |
| compressor made from an old 1/2 inch open ended spanner. | |

| I watched a guy do valve springs and stem seals on a 12 | |
| cylinder just a few weeks back, reminded me how I helped put | |
| 16lb springs in a Honda in Seattle, wind the crank to bottom | |
| dead centre, a length of cord through the spark plug hole and | |
| wind to near TDC, push the collet down with a screw driver, pop | |
| the keeper, pull the springs, new ones on, collets back, back | |
| off the piston, pull the cord. Job done. The guy doing the 12 | |
| cylinder took well under an hour to do the lot. Similar method | |
| as Nick, just didn't need anything except a push. Standard valve | |
| springs are easily pushed down (even on the motor mentioned) | |

| Hi Rhys, you will notice the rope in spark plug hole, whilst | |
| pushing springs is quite easy getting tiny little collets in or | |
| out & holding a spring down at the same time I found fiddly & | |
| frustrating hence the heath robinson valve compressor. | |
| Cheers Nick | |

| Hi Nick, yes I did spot the rope, that's why I mentioned | |
| "similar method". We, in Seattle, and the guy doing the 12 | |
| cylinder, all used a magnet, pencil like to grab the tiny | |
| collets. Very similar, and you are right, they are fiddly, the | |
| magnet is a game changer. | |

| I would agree with the fiddlyness of this job having done the | |
| springs on the Lifan 212cc with the collet system. After losing | |
| the collet retainers down the hole that the push rods come up | |
| through and having to open the engine to get at them I would | |
| suggest another tip too, Find a socket that fits the valve cap, | |
| put a magnet inside it, use this to push down on the valve cap, | |
| rope in place to stop valve drop and the collets end up on the | |
| magnet, not down in the engine. ::) | |
| Putting them back in without a tool was a matter of patience and | |
| a lot of swearing, I got the knack after many, many failed tries | |
| at it, but having the tool Nick made would have made it a | |
| doddle. | |
| The collet system is considered superior to the slotted steel | |
| cap you find in most of these engines and GX tuning recommends | |
| them for some of the heavier valve springs they sell. | |
