The champagne socialists will think this is great, but fail to
realise we already have nationalised trains and the tickets
arent cheaper and the service isnt better. Its only when you
go to places like the US, whilst despite being expensive in
general, public transport is cheap as chips. That will never
transpire here.
Fully expect the Labour government to take away the free bus
passes for pensioners and the veterans rail card to divert the
costs to some net zero type project which wont make a blind bit
of difference, or have funds diverted to our boat friends

I can't see how this is ever going to improve anything, other
that the (inevitably striking) rail workers' pay packets.
I regularly spend time in parts of Asia. When I look at how they
function, it makes me wonder why on earth the UK is in such a
mess. If we had a rail system that was as efficient as the
Japanese... but then I look at the government and realise it
will never happen.

As I understand it, the reason Japan has an efficient rail
system is largely a matter of geography. As a long, thin country
with most people living in a fairly thin coastal strip, and a
lot of mountainous terrain, it made sense to invest in an
effective rail network and there isn't the space for a competing
network of roads.
The UK is comparatively wide and flat and we allowed
roadbuilding to compete while underinvesting in rail
infrastructure. And the Civil Service lawyers who drafted the
rail privatisation bill regarded it as very apt that it went
into force on 1 April.

Fair points. But without wishing to go on a pro-ESEA dialogue, I
suspect it's also hugely about culture, mentality, respect etc
etc etc

Am I right in thinking there's a fines/refunds policy in place
for when trains are late by a certain amount of time (a few
minutes?) so passengers either get their money back or rail
companies are fined, in order to ensure punctuality and
reliability is the main priority?

Simon Calder ( Travel expert) already stated this will only save
1% of what the tax payer burden is
Still Im sure the service will improve massively when its run
by the union, and there will be no more safety issues

Absolutely, but not really incorrect. Just saying its
nationalised wont change a thing, as evidenced by whats here
already under the states control. If people think it will bring
what we really want, which is cheaper tickets; dream on.
