| [font=georgia]Introduction | |
| The fur on the back of my neck began to rise, "You want me to | |
| what?" I stuttered | |
| A fearsome laugh arose, "Did you not hear me, old man? I told | |
| you to hand me your clan." A dark spiral circled only | |
| inches--centimeters away from me. His breath reeked of death and | |
| his voice slithered into the air like smoke when he spoke, "You | |
| asked for my help, and now.. you must pay the price!" | |
| "You are a mad man to think I'd ever hand my clan over to you. | |
| You're a treacherous beast and I would rather die than let you | |
| near my home." I said. Somehow through all the fear swelling in | |
| my chest, I spoke with as much confidence as I would when giving | |
| a speech. | |
| Then came the laughter. The high-pitched sound I knew would give | |
| me nightmares if I made it through this day, "Very well. Your | |
| wish is my command, my king," he said. Suddenly, in what seemed | |
| like a split second his black scales wrapped around my chest, | |
| tightening. | |
| I gasped for breath, but the more I tried to take in, the more | |
| he'd squeeze out of my lungs. I tried to scream and thrash, but | |
| I began to feel warm breath on the back of my neck. His wide | |
| jaws slowly closed onto my thin neck and warm blood trickled | |
| down my arms and spine. I felt weak. Why couldn't I fight him | |
| off? I wondered as the corner of my eyes started to dull and | |
| turn dark. | |

| Introduction | |
| I began to draw back my sword, but just before I plunged it down | |
| into the mass of scales his eyes met mine. His icy cold eyes | |
| were filled with acceptance for his doom. He quickly looked | |
| away, as if no longer able to look at me. I could not blame him. | |
| An impatient tail flicked in the corner of my eye. It had to be | |
| done immediately. And so, I plunged my sword deep into the | |
| patterned scales. At first there was a blood-curdling scream, | |
| but soon after the body went limp. I kicked it towards the side | |
| and made my way back to the lair, trying to erase the wide, | |
| accepting eyes from my memory. Trying to forget how I did not | |
| pity the soul at all. | |
| The judgmental eyes of the clan wandered across me as I entered. | |
| Mutters began to form, piercing my ears, "He's a murderer," they | |
| said, "He is evil," they taunted, "A criminal, he is," the | |
| elders would say. | |
| No. I told myself, I'm an executioner. I did not choose this | |
| fate. It chose me. | |
| Autobiography | |
| Later that day I was called into my leader's cave to collect my | |
| weekly earnings. It was a meager ten thousand treasure, but it'd | |
| have to do. | |
| As I entered his cave, I itched to get out as soon as possible. | |
| The cave was dark and humid, smelling of mold, so I tried to | |
| breathe through my mouth. His cave was confining and made me | |
| feel as if I couldn't breathe, but as I continued forward it | |
| opened up into a large dome. | |
| In the center of the dome sat a large throne made from bones. | |
| The bones may as well have been of all the dragons I'd executed | |
| or every one of his kills. Sitting on the throne was my leader, | |
| no. Dictator. He was barely visible with his pitch-black scales. | |
| "My leader," I announced myself, "I have come to collect my | |
| earnings." As I spoke I tried to avoid eye contact. I once had | |
| made the mistake of looking into his glowing red eyes and I | |
| wasn't about to make it again. | |
| I quickly pushed the memory away as he replied, "Oh, yes, that," | |
| he flicked his tail around my small sack of treasure. "Before | |
| you take it," he said, "I'd like to have a word with you." | |
| I took a deep gulp and tried to calm my breathing, but now it | |
| felt as if the cave walls were closing in on me. "Of course, my | |
| leader." | |
| "Good," his voice echoed. "I must ask a favour of you," he said, | |
| "you should be honoured, as I don't ask favours often." | |
| What could he possibly want from me? I thought. "I am highly | |
| honoured. What is it you seek?" I manage to choke out. | |
| "Well since you are an executioner, I thought it would suit to | |
| have you kill someone for me." | |
| "Sire?" I questioned. "I am no hitman. I mean no disrespect to | |
| your offer, but I believe that you have much more ability than | |
| I." | |
| "Nonsense!" he snapped. I was taken aback by his voice, as if it | |
| could've blown me away. "You can, and will carry out this | |
| request. If you come back successfully your earnings will be a | |
| grand one hundred thousand treasure. Do I make myself clear?" | |
| "Yes, my leader" | |
| "Good. Very good," he said, handing me a scroll and my ten | |
| thousand treasure, "now leave me to my slumber." | |
| I quickly fled the depths of his lair, frantically freeing | |
| myself of the claustrophobia. The second I was back onto open | |
| ground I raised my wings and pushed off of the ground. It was | |
| nice to be able to breathe the fresh air after what could have | |
| been a century. | |
| I eventually spotted dark crystalline scales and swooped down to | |
| land. It was now dark out and the moon was high in the sky. The | |
| crystalline dragon gazed at me without saying a word, I supposed | |
| that meant I had to speak first. | |
| "Hello, Eclipse," I said softly, setting the sack of my earnings | |
| at her side. Eclipse was the only one in the clan who could | |
| accept me, even after my mother and father had rejected me. She | |
| accepted my devotion to the dark and all. She was my weakness. | |
| She looked relieved to see me. "Nox, where have you been? You | |
| were supposed to be back right after. . . well, you know," she | |
| said. | |
| I pondered how to tell her what happened. She never liked to | |
| hear that I was talking to my leader, Slay. "I was given a | |
| mission while collecting my earnings," I said. | |
| "A mission?" she inquired. | |
| "Yes, and I will be gone a while. I apologise in advance for my | |
| absence," I choke out. For some reason, leaving the beautiful | |
| imperial tore me to pieces. | |
| She simply nodded, looking down at her claws. I decided it'd be | |
| best to leave now, and so I did. Before she had the chance to | |
| look back up at me, I took off in a few short flaps of my wings. | |
| I decided it would've been best not to look back, but I felt her | |
| eyes pinned to my back. Push it away, I thought. I turned to | |
| read the scroll now, hoping to distract myself from her gaze. | |
| The scroll was written in elegant red ink. I soon realized from | |
| the scent of the scroll that the writing was not in ink, but in | |
| blood. Other than the odor, I did not mind it. | |
| One word was printed across the parchment, "LEGEND," it read. I | |
| knew what this meant. I suppressed a sigh, thinking of the | |
| Wildclaw. He was much too difficult for my taste. Slay wouldn't | |
| have wanted me to kill him, though. Legend was too easily | |
| influenced. | |
| I took a sharp turn, flying past Slay's lair and into a snowy | |
| forest. Legend lived away from the rest of the clan. He was | |
| disliked by many and he disliked them just as much. The clan | |
| found him too aggressive and rude. He found them too puny and | |
| nice. | |
| Once I found his clearing in heart of the forest, I went in for | |
| a landing. Just as my claws pierced the snow laden earth, I | |
| heard a scoff. "What do you want, Nox?" | |
| I let out an annoyed groan, "I'm here on business, Legend, and | |
| I'd like to get it done fast." Why couldn't my mission have been | |
| to kill him? | |
| "Oh, don't tell me," he said, making puppy eyes, "you're here to | |
| kill me? What ever will I do?" | |
| I snorted. "I wish," I said, "Slay asked me to--" | |
| "Yes, I know. I'm not stupid," he said. "I know why you're here, | |
| and I know what your mission is." | |
| Not too sure on the stupid part. "Then?" I said through gritted | |
| teeth. Why must he be so difficult? I thought. | |
| A wide grin spread across his face. I knew that couldn't be | |
| good. "You must visit the cemetery," he said with a short | |
| cackle. | |
| I stared blankly at the wildclaw, "I have to what?" Everyone | |
| knew an executioner simply did not go to see the dragon he'd | |
| killed. Bad things happened. Angry spirits were not to be dealt | |
| with. | |
| Legend began to say something, but I ignored it. | |
| Instead I thought of the last executioner, my mentor. He was | |
| sent on a mission into the cemetery but I had never seen him | |
| again. All I heard were stories of what dragons thought | |
| happened. | |
| How the angry spirits took possession over him. How they pulled | |
| him into the dirt, burying him alive. How the spirits created a | |
| demon out of him. | |
| I pushed the thoughts aside. I had nothing to fear. Since my | |
| mentor's death, the clan assigned a keeper to the cemetery. Of | |
| course, the keeper was just another freak they wanted gone. But | |
| he was more than that. He would keep the spirits at bay. He had | |
| to. | |
| One question buzzed through my head though; Why assign a keeper | |
| when the spirits are only angry with their murderers? I'd have | |
| to find out. I pulled myself back into reality, and Legend was | |
| still talking. | |
| "Are you listening?" he said. | |
| Without a single word, I stalked off into the forest. As I | |
| traveled to the outer edge of the forest I smelled something | |
| quite familiar. Rotting flesh. | |
| The smell came from my right, with the cemetery to the left. As | |
| much as I wanted to get my job over with, I was also curious to | |
| find the source of the scent. With that, I turned towards it, | |
| but a fine layer of brambles blocked my way. | |
| Beyond the brambles I could see two dragons. One was laying on | |
| the ground with an almost fatal gash on the side of it's chest, | |
| but the wound seemed to be old. I also spotted a few fresh | |
| scratches along the dragon's spine. | |
| The other dragon loomed over it, claws stained with blood. It | |
| spoke,"I'm doing this for your own good. Do not struggle, or | |
| this will be much more painful." | |
| The hurt dragon let out a child-like wail, and I realized that | |
| it was a child. The dragon was only a hatchling. | |
| I quickly found an opening in the brambles and bursted through. | |
| The older dragon was just about to plunge it's claws into the | |
| hatchling's spine, but stopped at my arrival. Both of them | |
| looked at me in shock. | |
| Before either had a chance to react, I rammed my body into the | |
| older dragon using all my might. I was fueled by anger and | |
| hatred for the dragon. The dragon attempted to shove me off, but | |
| I was too heavy. | |
| I now recognized the dragon to be a ridgeback with light eyes. A | |
| light dragon who was killing a hatchling, I would have thought | |
| it impossible. It shoved me again, this time beating my weight | |
| with strength. | |
| I was thrown back, but quickly regained balance. The dragon | |
| lunged towards me. I quickly drew my sword and plunged it | |
| forwards. For a second, the ridgeback's eyes were filled with | |
| fear as it tried to halt, and the next, blood dripped from it's | |
| mouth. | |
| My sword was embedded deep into it's neck. I pulled it back | |
| letting the dragon's body fall to the ground. I thought back to | |
| this morning, and once again I felt no pity. This time, however, | |
| I was not ashamed of my actions. I was pleased with what I did. | |
