I knew someday one would turn up to buy right and used. Echo 501
bought PHO.
Which didnt matter as I have all of that on hand.
Psi felt good and popped on choke all I cared about.
Hopefully turns out to be good to go.
If good I can test one stock now then muffler modded to see.

Threw the 18 I took off 490 on it.
Starts easy and runs cuts.
Tune on it was fat. L and H was. Idle wasnt even hitting 2k and
checking ot was 11's.
Without pulling plastic epa stops I wanted to see where she
would go on tune. L leaned perfect. H would tune to 12.6K
before hitting stop. Now Idle is around 2700

Cheap free muffler mod to free up the echo some. Toss that inner
pipe and screen. Open sides up and added a front gill.
If wanted bigger I think the 490 has a 3/4 or 7/8 pipe in its
muffler.
Pencil hand piece I bought from Shaun Carr many years ago still
going strong.
Just doing that alone it showed about 300 more rpm on idle and
wot throttle 13.2K
Might have to come up with better deflector.

Jmo the metal top handle and rubber grip on these are worth the
difference. Better feel to me the the echo plastic handle one I
been using for years for my small saw.
Sort of wish the clutch cover was mag though.

Just some of my thoughts on 501 after picking up yesterday.
I knew someday one would turn up to buy right and used. Echo 501
bought PHO.
Which didnt matter as I have all of that on hand.
Psi felt good and popped on choke all I cared about.
If good I can test one stock now then muffler modded to see.
The metal handle with rubber coating feels so much better then
the plastic handles the cheaper version echo use.
Wish their better one came with mag clutch covers over plastic.
Mixed about those captive bar nuts.
Like the standard recoil better then the spring assisted one
like on 490.
Quick muffler mod for no cost.
Also own a hacked ported echo 490 with plastic handle been using
for a few years now.
Here is what I noticed yesterday to see how it was stock with
epa caps on.
Tune on it was fat. L and H was. Idle wasnt even hitting 2k and
checking wot was 11's.
Without pulling plastic epa stops I wanted to see where she
would go on tune. L leaned perfect. H would tune to 12.6K before
hitting stop. Now Idle is around 2700. I still havent even had
to touch I. L was just to fat IMO. Crisp throttle now no lag
etc.
Not touching tune. Pulling that inner pipe and screen and
opening exits on deflector and just a gill in front of
deflector. = Just doing that alone it showed about 300 more rpm
on idle and wot throttle 13.2K without touching tune.

More pics and testing and retune to turn down a bit even thought
wot 13k-14k in service manual. Was 13.2k after muffler mod but
went with 12.6k for long run.
Like standard cover 501 over the spring assist on 490.
But understand why some folks need those.
Love the feel of the rubber grip metal handle over the plastic
handle big time.
All the 490 needed to stop fines from getting by. So all the 501
is getting too. 272 o-ring fix Corey Corp found to work on his
4910 way back.
Psi check. Good like it felt. 8)
