Solo 603 Replacement Piston and Cylinder
By: yldflight Date: October 8, 2012, 11:21 pm
---------------------------------------------------------
Hi to everyone.
I'm just new to the site and have joined as i'm at a complete
loss as to find a replacement piston and cylinder for a Solo 603
chainsaw.
If anyone can advise where i can find a replacement 56mm piston
to suit the Solo 603 and/or a replacement cylinder, it would be
greatly appreciated.
I've been tearing my hair out trying to find these parts. I am
sure another piston from a different chainsaw manufacturer would
fit, but no one seems to know any cross reference pistons that
will do the job.
Hopefully the photos will be of help in finding a matching
piston that will work in the Solo 603 cylinder, though i really
need a new cylinder.
Kind regards
Fabian

I wonder about a 56mm big bore 066 660 stihl piston being close
or not.
There was a 603 piston and cylinder for sale awhile back. Guy I
think in Germany had it and a 603 FS.

I could be wrong but from what i understand, Solo and Stihl have
their cylinders and pistons made by Mahle. It would seem logical
that there should be a Stihl chainsaw with a 56mm piston and a
12mm wrist pin (gudgeon pin), and overall dimensions that are
similar to the Solo 603 piston.
The best option would be if someone knows where i can find a
replacement piston and cylinder combination.

The Stihl 066/660 big bore piston is not a match and cannot be
made to match. It is too short overall and the pin to deck is
also too short.
From the Bailey's website . . .
Stihl 066/MS 660 with Big Bore Kit
Bore 56mm
Height 39mm
Head Type Flat
Piston Pin 12mm x 7mm x 33mm
Rings 56mm x 1.2mm Ductile Split Groove
Circlips 12mm
Compression/Pin to top of Piston 15.25mm
Compression/Pin Center to top of Piston 21.25mm

In the 395 Husqvarna the pin is 13mm

I wonder question how accurate baileys info is on BB piston. I
wonder why the info on their big bore differs from a 54mm 066
piston so much in length etc. ???
stock 54mm 066 info
Stihl 066, MS 660
Replaces Part Number 1122 030 2005
Bore 53.96mm
Height 43mm
Head Type Flat
Piston Pin 12mm x 8mm x 33mm
Rings 54mm x 1.2mm (Caber F-Cast GH.F)
Compression/Pin Top to top of Piston 17mm
Compression/Pin Center to top of Piston 23mm

Are the rings on these 1.5mm thick? I have a set of afm 56mm
1.5mm rings left over from a 166 project long ago.

Like Al Smith said, I have cleaned up much worse NLA piston and
put new rings on and the saws still run afterwords. No it's not
a perfect but it works.
Make sure ring grooves are cleaned up with no burrs and moves
freely in and out. I run the ring around in groove till it
rotates easily all the way around without catching. Piston
>OO<ring in groove like this till I get fit perfect.

If you look carefully at the up ended photo of the piston, you
will see that the lowest section of the (exhaust side) piston
skirt is half the thickness (by 0.5mm ) than the intake side of
the skirt.
It slops about quite a bit in the bore and would most likely
rattle the exhaust side of the piston skirt to pieces.
The biggest problem with the Solo 603 piston when considering a
replacement from a different manufacturer is the 12mm wrist pin
(piston pin) diameter.
Every 56mm piston seems to use either a 13mm or a 14mm wrist
pin, and that seriously limits the potential piston options.

Unless the exhaust port is extremely wide it looks like the pin
placement would allow you put the piston in backwards . I don't
know how well the intake would seal though .Might ,might not .
Wiseco no doubt could make you a piston as could that gent up on
Canada .The problem there is the danged thing would cost 5 times
what the saw is worth .
