| Diablo 3 Groupies | |
| By: Elryn Date: October 23, 2015, 12:58 pm | |
| --------------------------------------------------------- | |
| So some days ago, Faerdin mentioned on Twitter that he was | |
| dabbling with Diablo 3 and seemed to be having fun with it. | |
| For those who do not know, Diablo 3 is the third game (excluding | |
| expansions) in the Diablo games, a flagship series of Blizzard. | |
| Its main claim to fame is Diablo 2 that came back out in 1999 | |
| which somewhat turned into the classic Dungeon Crawler (I think | |
| that is the right type) RPG because of how awesome (no really, | |
| the cinematics, the CINEMATICS for 1999... They are epic) it | |
| was. Although most of you are to young for that I hasard to | |
| guess *glums* | |
| But back to the matter at hand, after talking in the chat last | |
| night a bit, it seems like Faerdin is hardly alone. Break as | |
| well as Ronin play it as well so I thought it might do to | |
| actually make a thread about it on the forums. | |
| I am a bit surprised though. I do actually know Diablo 3 but | |
| that word goes that it was a flop when it came out back in 2012 | |
| (I think). Mainly, not much or very little end game content and | |
| generally underwhelming compared to its predecessor Diablo 2. | |
| That might very well be true since I only found interest enough | |
| to play it for the story when it came out and completely dropped | |
| off of it afterwards. | |
| After a little investigation though, it does seem like there is | |
| much more now then when it came out. There is a catch though: it | |
| mainly has to do with the new content and changes brought by the | |
| expansion Reaper of Souls. | |
| And that is where it gets tricky. Faerdin as far as I am aware | |
| has the game with the expansion. It is possible to play without | |
| the expansion but the content that is worthwhile really only | |
| comes with the expansion. Off the bat, that makes it a rather | |
| steep buy of 40$ if one does not have the game... | |
| But I disgress, Faerdin is the one who is actively playing it | |
| here so I should leave it to him to explain what he is doing and | |
| what ideas he might have for anyone interested in playing. Let | |
| 'er rip, Fae. | |

| Also, before anyone mentions it... I know, the title of this | |
| thread is a terribly bad pun. Apologies for that @.@. | |

| Hey. No apunogies. | |
| ... | |
| Well, my life is forfeit now. But let's talk about Diablo III | |
| instead of my impending doom. :D | |
|
It's really easy to glide through all of Diablo III's | |
| story without much substance -- though the campaign lasted quite | |
| a while for me, especially with the addition of Act V from | |
| Reaper of Souls -- but there are several factors that extended | |
| the life of the game for me. First is the way Diablo III | |
| currently handles difficulty. Monsters scale with you based on | |
| your level, and so the difficulty of the monsters you defeat is | |
| controlled through the difficulty menu, through which you have | |
| these options: | |
| Easy | |
| Normal | |
| Hard | |
| Expert | |
| Master (Unlocked upon completing the campaign) | |
| Torment I-X (Unlocked upon reaching level 60) | |
| I was immediately able to dial up the difficulty to Expert, | |
| which made the monsters a more significant threat for the | |
| trade-off of superior gold and experience rewards. As I | |
| completed the non-Reaper of Souls segment of the campaign, I was | |
| able to dial it up to Master as well, and then to Torment I | |
| immediately on reaching level 70. And when you reach level 70, | |
| you unlock the alternative to the campaign called "Adventure | |
| Mode," which is primarily where the endgame content of the game | |
| comes from. | |
| Once you start progressing through Torment difficulty levels, | |
| your likelihood of finding Death's Breath (An important reagent) | |
| and legendary items increases, and you unlock the ability to | |
| start finding and equipping armor sets -- legendary pieces of | |
| gear that give you special bonuses when used in tandem. Along | |
| with this is the addition of Kanai's Cube, which allows you to | |
| "archive" legendaries and use some of their powers even if you | |
| don't have them equipped, among other useful things. | |
| In Adventure Mode, there are three primary ways to obtain gear: | |
| 1) Bounties, which send you back into older areas of the game to | |
| complete certain tasks in exchange for gold and items. | |
| 2) Nephalem Rifts, randomly chosen dungeons where you kill | |
| minions until you summon a "Rift Guardian" boss monster. | |
| 3) Greater Rifts, which are essentially the latter, only | |
| exponentially more difficult and timed on top of that. | |
| This is essentially what I have been caught up in with playing | |
| Diablo III. Granted, I haven't had the wealth of time I would | |
| like to play it, but the campaign and Adventure Mode have made | |
| the game last quite a while for me, and I haven't even decided | |
| to create another character yet.
| |
| If anyone other than the people who have already expressed | |
| personal interest in Diablo III are considering giving the game | |
| a try, I have some advice: | |
| 1) Select "Seasonal" when you create your character. Being | |
| seasonal grants you the possibility for additional rewards and | |
| bonuses until the start of the next season (Which shouldn't be | |
| for a while), upon which your character is converted into an | |
| ordinary, non-seasonal character. The game does a poor job of | |
| telling you "PLEASE CLICK ME, THERE IS LITERALLY NO REASON NOT | |
| TO DO THIS," and I actually had to recreate my character and | |
| start over when I heard about the benefits. | |
| 2) Explore every nook and cranny of every place you go. This is | |
| a no-brainer for people who have already played this kind of | |
| game before. But there's really no way you can stress this | |
| enough. Powerful items can literally be anywhere -- weapon | |
| racks, monsters, burial urns, etc. -- and it's actually worth it | |
| to scour every crevice until you are certain you have thoroughly | |
| checked the area. It can take a while, but it's worth it when | |
| you have a greater chance of getting good gear. | |
| 3) Salvage everything. EVERYTHING. Shops are pretty useful in | |
| Diablo III toward the beginning of the game, and for that, you | |
| do need gold. But as the game progresses, I found that going to | |
| my blacksmith and salvaging my item drops for resources became | |
| the more practical solution. Reusable Parts, Arcane Dust, and | |
| Veiled Crystal are always very useful (Until you are entirely, | |
| completely optimized with your gear at level 70) and have a | |
| constant level of scarcity where your gold income, by | |
| comparison, ramps up immensely in the end-game. Those materials | |
| are worth more than gold in the long run. | |

| *chuckles* You actually went there. | |
| On the topic at hand, I have resurrected my much ignored Wizard, | |
| Malakhor. He is rather undergeared and what not due to his | |
| age... but I am trying to make him decent again with a Vyr set + | |
| Halo of Arlyse combo. Suffice to say, he is rather lacking Vyr | |
| set pieces right now *chuckles*. | |
| I am not sure how clans and the sort actually work in Diablo 3 | |
| or if they are even worth it... but if you can find me, Faerdin, | |
| than feel free to make communication with your Hammer happy | |
| Crusader any time. Likely not much of a point in making a new | |
| character right now if you are that far ahead of things. | |
| Oh and I think that is one thing worth pointing out. Faerdin is | |
| likely right that adventure mode is an end game thing now. Given | |
| that the different equipments they have been pumping out with | |
| the expansion, there is end-game room in trying to assemble your | |
| own working set of items that synergize in interesting ways. | |
