Knitting question

I want to attempt a knitting pattern called "rank and file"
There are 4 rows of repeat stiches to creat this pattern.
How do you keep track of which row you're on?

I use a stitch counter - a spool-like thing you slide onto the
end of the knitting needle. You should be able to find them
anywhere that sells knitting supplies; I found mine at WalMart.

It can be done as simply as using pen and paper. But I also
like the row counters that you slide onto your needles. I
usually end up changing the counter every second row. I'm not
familiar with your pattern, but if there is a (mostly) knit row,
followed by a (mostly) purl row - a definitive front and back -
counting the rows every second works fine.

To do sockenett I use stich counters (purple is on the end that
I purl)
But 4 different repeat rows is intimidating

Yah, row counters are good, and can be found at the big marts,
fabric stores, or online. As mentioned above, pencil/paper and
hash marks will work just fine for a 4-row repeat pattern.
Is this for the dishcloth? Think pencil and paper will be fine.
Just remember to count your stitches every so often. Oh, and
learn to use a lifeline! YouTube videos have instructions.
And the more you knit, the more you will be able to read your
knitting; ie., identify a stitch as a knit or a purl, and that
will help you track where you are in a pattern.
And a 4-row repeat neednt be intimidating. Just work each row
and concentrate on just that row, then move onto the next row
and treat it the same. You can do it!

I do intarsia where every row is different! I have to follow a
graph for that one. I use a ruler to make sure I stay on the
right row.
Re-write the pattern of stitches so you have each row on one
line and then also put spaces between each row so when you are
looking at it, it is easier to tell which row you should be
working on.
Like this:
(knit 3, purl 4, knit 3) repeat 10 times
(purl 3, knit 4, purl 3) repeat 10 times
(knit 1, purl 4, knit 5) repeat 9 times purl 4, knit 1
(purl 1, knit 4, purl 5) repeat 9 times knit 4, purl 1
(I'm just making up stuff here; don't even know if that would
look like anything. :) )

Circular needles makes it harder to use the little slip on row
counters! I think pen and paper is your best bet. Or use the
row counter but not on your needles.

So this is a baby blanket with a 4-row repeat? Of the rank &
file stitch? You could use a hand-held click counter, or get a
computerized app like Knit Companion ( theres a a free
version) that might work well for you.You can download the
pattern into the app, and then mark off the rows as you knit
them.

Post It Notes on the row you're working - works for knitting,
crochet, and counted cross stitch - which is where I first
started using it. A strip of magnetic "tape" on a metal
clipboard holding the pattern works the same way.
