Getting ready for Christmas 2019
By: gmatoy Date: December 27, 2018, 3:25 pm
---------------------------------------------------------
I'm hoping to do a lot of sewing in the spring and summer. I
found a list of things I meant to sew for this year, but didn't
get to doing. So I think I will start with those. Aprons, more
mug rugs, and Pete the Cat pillows are on my new list. Also I
already have the ornament of the year (mittens) cut out and
ready to sew. I even know what the "gift of the year" will be
(tortilla warmers). Right now it feels like I'm ahead of the
game.
Any bets on when I declare that it can't all get done? ;D

I tend to start shopping for Christmas around February or March.
By shopping, I mean looking online and at my favorite (high end)
thrift store. I shop for myself, on behalf of the cats, as well
as others.
For example, I already know that one of my good friends is
getting a nice selection of flavored black teas. In 2018, I sent
her a pack from Tea Forte, but in my town we have a shop called
Spices and Vices. Among others, they have teas. So I plan to
stop in one day and write down what ones I want to buy in late
November and send her. That way I can get her as much as I want
of each flavor.
For me, I have found two pairs of cute cat-themed socks, custom
made, on Etsy. I do not allow shoes in the house and I do not
like slippers so the cats are going to get these for me.
As I buy things over the spring, summer and fall, I will wrap
them and put them away with the Christmas decorations so,
hopefully, when I unwrap them on Christmas day they will be a
surprise. I will also, as I did in 2018, plan my menus for the
holidays, though I always have permission to not cook anything
and just go out. That makes it fun because I am prepared to do
exactly what I want on the day of without having to make
preparations I did not plan for.
I also check out Etsy about three times over the course of the
year for "red vintage Christmas ornaments." About 250 pages turn
up so it takes me 2-4 weeks to check them all out. Hence, the
reason I do it only every few months.

I really am going to get knitting my hats...
Really!
[OK, that should probably read: "really hope so"! ::)]

I have a plan to reduce overcrowding (furniture) in at least one
room (office has two desks and one of them needs to go) and
possibly the sewing room, too. There is a treadmill in there
that serves no useful purpose in the sewing room. An *extra*
large but 16 year old tv in the house (upstairs) is also being
declared excess to needs and the size of the room it's in. If
it were downstairs, it would be easier to get rid of...this is
one of those big "man cave" tvs from the early 2000s. Awkward
to take upstairs in the first place and just as awkward to get
back downstairs when it stops working well.
A hide-a-bed couch in the living room needs replacing (long
story - but we bought it about twenty years ago - so it's not
like it hasn't had it's fair share of use since 1998/early
1999). That one needs replacing - as the odds of having more
company than I have beds for or space to put an air mattress has
already been demonstrated as a certainty. I got sick two days
after Christmas and trying to quarantine myself *comfortably*
has proven to be a lot more work than expected. Then a little
consideration on how to arrange the living room to make sure
that there is a place to put the tree next year without
rearranging the furniture like we did this year...
Some of the UnFinished prOjects (UFOs) from this year may get
slid to the next birthday, if not Christmas 2019. Long story -
getting sick after Thanksgiving and getting "well" in time to go
on a couple of trips with VorGuy did not leave enough sewing
time, shopping time, or wrapping time...
With a travel sewing machine (and a small jewelry assembly kit
in a shoe box for trips too short or to places too small to set
up even a 3/4 sized sewing machine) - I'm hoping that I can stay
more on top of the sewing & crafting schedule. The embroidery
machine stays at home...it's too heavy and too bulky to take
anywhere.
But so far, my plans are nebulous, because I'm still sick, on
antibiotics, and nowhere near being able to do anything except
think about what else could be put on the list...

Ah, but having a list of ideas is half way there! (Shhh! I've
ben selling that to my husband for years; do not give me away!)

I agree with you - having a list of ideas if half way there.
Now, the other half is finding the muscle power to get the
excess stuff out of the house to the curb for pickup (monthly
heavy trash, FreeCycle or the equivalent, or a van from the
Salvation Army) and getting the needed new stuff bought,
delivered, and in place, as well as the items that are being
kept - just relocated elsewhere in the house. At 61, I'm not
going to be dragging large appliances around or couches.

Today I am working on getting the sewing/guest room back into
something resembling order. I took all of the bags of polar
fleece scraps and put them into one heavy duty black garbage
bag, sat on it to get as much air out as possible and then tied
it closed. It now fits under the desk in there. Ta-done!
I cleared out the desk drawer and rearranged it. It now closes.
I've been working on this room for several days now. You can now
see floor and it will be safe to bring the sewing machine out
into the dining room. I use one end of the table to sew.
I need put in hems in the pants I made for our granddaughter,
before she packs to go back to college. Once I'm done with that,
I'm going to start the birthday gifts for my family and then on
to sewing for Christmas 2019!

And today I lost another tooth (crown) - lost one last month
while Mom was visiting, lost one on the other side today - so my
list has expanded to "get a complete dental checkup in October
next year"....

The bad luck story continues - a toilet kept running (?) until
it overflowed/backed up - and then the second downstairs toilet
also backed up/overflowed - just with a whole lot less water.
The sort of good news - it's all clear, clean water - or seems
to be. Possibly washing machine rinse cycle? Possibly a toilet
cut off that didn't work properly.
Christmas 2018 is going to be one for telling stories about in
years to come...of how NOT to have a standard holiday season.
Memorable? Yeah, it's going to be memorable...
