| "New" sewing machine | |
| By: gmatoy Date: June 26, 2018, 12:27 am | |

| Some of you may remember that DH pulled out all of the stops for | |
| me when I was fighting cancer. As part of that, he bought me a | |
| Brother sewing machine from Costco. Which I had never used, | |
| because my brain wouldn't hold information while I was | |
| undergoing treatments. Today I went to my mother's and she sat | |
| me down and taught me how to thread the machine, how to change | |
| the stitches, take out and clean the bobbin casing. She also | |
| taught me how to drop the feed dogs, which makes me so happy to | |
| be able to do, as my 1960s Singer doesn't drop the feed dogs, it | |
| raises the plate and is difficult to do. So now I can mend | |
| things much easier! | |
| I learned on her machine as it is exactly the same model bought | |
| with in day or two of mine. So I didn't even have to lug mine to | |
| her house! Then DH took me to the local JoAnn's store where I | |
| bought buttons and the cord to thread through the casing of the | |
| laundry bags I'm making for DGD and her college roommate. | |
| Today was a good day! | |

| New sewing machines are great presents! | |
| I've gotten one or two that way and I probably spent more time | |
| using those presents than most of the others - well, maybe the | |
| crock pot that I've owned for over 40 years and the sheets we | |
| got as a wedding present got more use. But not many things did! | |

| Congratulations! New sewing machines with new features are fun. | |
| Three years ago I finally pulled myself into the new century for | |
| sewing machines. Why didn't someone tell me that the needle | |
| could move now? LOL! I love that feature. | |

| So glad you're enjoying your new machine! I bought a gently-used | |
| Brother machine from a student who was moving back to China and | |
| couldn't take it with her. I've used it a couple of times. A bit | |
| of a learning curve from my 1977 Kenmore (which I'm keeping, | |
| BTW). I can't figure out the needle threader - wondering if it | |
| might be broken. No big deal. Otherwise, I'm being patient and | |
| learning something new each time I sit down to use it. It's so | |
| lightweight! | |

| way cool! | |
| I still have the Kenmore I bought in 1982, and sometimes I think | |
| about replacing it, but I really like how it works. And it feels | |
| very substantial. | |
| Only recently have I found that I'd like to be able to shift the | |
| needle from side to side. | |

| My mother said she can only get hers to work about half the | |
| time, so I just manually thread it! | |

| I don't even make clothes with mine! | |
| Well, I do sometimes, but only when it's to run up a quick | |
| little skirt for my DD. I got mine because I wanted to make some | |
| things for practical use around the house. One of the best | |
| investments I ever made. My first project was turning a stack of | |
| old tee shirts into grocery bags. You would not believe the | |
| compliments I get! | |

| I make bags out of denim skirts. Sew the bottom closed and add | |
| straps! (Straps can be bought at a fabric store or made out of | |
| the legs of a pair of jeans.) | |

| Yep! LOTS of bags. The grocery bags were easy - All I had to do | |
| was sew the bottoms shut and cut off the sleeves and neckline. | |
| Once I got more confident, I actually made a messenger bag for | |
| work. It turned out really nice. | |
