Cat losing her sight
By: shadowfox79 Date: December 24, 2024, 1:39 am

DH and I had a discussion about our cat Dash the other day as
we're starting to think she's losing her sight in her old age.
I had my suspicions when I walked up behind her in the hallway
and she panicked and ran headfirst into a wall. I mentioned this
to DH, who later on noticed she seemed to be struggling to see
things in the kitchen. She's still finding her way around the
house okay in general, but it looks like her vision may be
starting to go.
Given that my mother went blind when I was twelve and remained
that way until her death, I've got a decent idea of what to do
when you have a blind family member. Don't move things around,
announce yourself when you approach, that sort of thing. DH,
however, was wondering if there was anything else we could do to
help her in this situation. The only other person I know who had
a blind cat is my aunt, and she didn't have to do anything since
her other cat kindly started guiding the blind cat everywhere. I
don't know if Spot will do that, although he adores Dash, so he
might.
Does anyone have any experience of this?

My 18-year-old kitty lost his sight near the end of his battle
with kidney failure. He bonked into things, often walked in
circles (which can be caused by vestibular issues as well as
disorientation from not being able to see). He was deeply
distressed--he became extremely lethargic, refused to eat or
drink, and appeared to be leaving us before rallying somewhat.
If your kitty's vision goes away completely, do be prepared for
a depression like this. She might need food and water brought
to her. We were able to get our guy to take liquid cat broth
through a baby syringe while his appetite was at its lowest.
She may need a litterbox placed in an easy-to-reach spot
(without moving the current one, of course). Laying down some
puppy pads can also help.

That makes sense. Mum had a similar period of depression after
she lost her sight, although in her case she knew it was coming.
If Dash needs us to bring the food to her we can do that. We
have two litter trays already but we can see where might be
convenient for her.

Dash is definitely losing her sight. She's struggling to play
fight with Spot as she can't see his paws and we've caught her
getting lost in a room a few times.
However, yesterday when she got lost she yelled for Spot and he
went and rescued her, so at least we have him on board.
