Has anyone any ideas about this? Horrible update
By: shadowfox79 Date: August 24, 2024, 3:20 am

My senior cat Spot, who is 13, has started going outside the
litterbox.
Being fans of "My Cat From Hell", DH and I have been trying
everything we've seen Jackson Galaxy suggest and are still
coming up short.
It's not that he can't get into the litterbox any more, because
he still uses it for peeing, he just won't poop in there.
It's not that he's not making it in time, because he almost
always does it in the same place (on the floor in front of the
kitchen sink) which means he had to walk past the box to get
there.
We've taken the lid off the box and it didn't help.
He's in a bonded pair with his sister Dash and they're still as
crazy about each other as they ever were, so she's not bullying
him out of the box.
Nothing has changed about the consistency, i.e. it's not hard as
a rock and therefore making him associate the box with pain.
As a last resort I suggested to DH that we get another litterbox
and put it in front of the sink. We haven't had chance to do
that yet, but whether that would work depends on what the
problem is in the first place - he may just decide to go next to
it.
Any thoughts?
(And yes, we've been trying to get him in to see the vet, but
they've been booked solid for a while.)

I hope you find an answer because I have the same problem. My
kitty (Zephyr) was also 13 when it started. The only difference
is that Zephyr would poop on paper, cloth, or anything left on
the floor. So in a spot that was favored, we put out a plastic
grocery bag and flattened it out. He uses that spot and every
day we pick up the bag, tie it shut and replace it with a new
one.
I hope someone knows why he does it and how I can fix it.

Have you actually spoken with a vet about this? I've always had
indoor cats through the years. On several occasions I've spoken
to my vet about a, maybe, serious problem with a cat. I've
never had a problem with doing this. Maybe your cat's problem
is just that she/he has taken a dislike to the litter. Maybe
the box needs to be washed out and new litter put in. But,
maybe they have a health problem. I'd try to get your cat into
a vet as soon as possible. Does the poop still look normal? Is
she/he eating normally? Please let us know how things turn out.

We've not been able to take him to the vet yet because they've
been booked up for some time, but I'll call them again and see
if they have a slot even if it means waiting a bit.
It still looks normal and Spot is eating normally, so I've no
idea what it is.

my sister's cat did this, but always on a rug. They just had to
take up all the small rugs in the house (and keep him out of
areas with large rugs that couldn't be taken up.) Like yours, he
peed in the box, but not #2.

Do cats squat like a dog to poop? I seem to recall a freinds
cat behaved like Spot. Come to find out there was a problem with
his rear touching the litter and it hurt him.

I just thought of another thing to consider. Several years ago
we had a cat who was 16 and began to poop outside the box too.
It was a covered box and we discovered that at that age he
couldn't do his business comfortably. Once we removed the cover
he started using the box again.

This morning, as I was getting dressed and DH was about to leave
for work, I heard from downstairs "No! In there! NO! Bad boy!"
Spot had jumped into the litter tray, kicked the litter around a
bit and then jumped out and did his business on the floor right
in front of DH. He's never done it when either of us have been
there to catch him before.
I think we're going to have to bite the bullet and get him in to
see the vet. I know DH was quite glad we couldn't get an
appointment before since getting Spot into a carrier is the
stuff of nightmares, but we've no choice.

Peeing outside the box is often a sign of kidney issues but I've
never had a cat that pooped outside the box, except when they
were having serious, end of life, issues.
If Spot is otherwise fine - no weight loss that you can discern
- it might be a behavioural issue, even though nothing (appears
to) has changed.
I think your best bet is to get him into a vet for a check-up.

He's booked in for next Tuesday. It was the soonest we could
manage. DH is already gearing him up to chase him into the
carrier.
