| A Question for Canadians | |

| I have a this day in history daily calendar. April 17 was | |
| said to be the day on which Canada became fully independent. | |
| If thats true why is Canada Day celebrated on July 1? | |

| Not a Canadian, but I got too curious to wait for an answer. | |
| I wondered if it was something like, we celebrate Independence | |
| Day, but they celebrate the Signing of the Constitution Day. | |
| Because it's one thing to become independent, and another to | |
| form a new government. | |
| And Wikipedia tells me: | |
|
it celebrates the anniversary of Canadian Confederation | |
| which occurred on July 1, 1867, with the passing of the British | |
| North America Act, 1867, when the three separate colonies of the | |
| United Canadas, Nova Scotia, and New Brunswick were united into | |
| a single dominion within the British Empire called | |
| Canada.
| |
