They already thanked me for a gift that will never come �

Here�s a new one. How would you handle this?
I ordered 5 place settings of flatware as a gift from our family
for an engaged couple off of their registry at a department
store�s website. I got a thank you note that wouldn�t win a
prize for content (�thank you for the generous gift,� no mention
of what the gift was), but made up for that by the lightning
speed with which it came. They must have written it the instant
that the store notified them that the gift had been ordered.
Then a few weeks later, I got an email from the store saying
that the order would be delayed, and �If you don't want to wait
for the item, you may visit the order details page and select
�CANCEL ITEM.�" I did nothing, because I didn�t care about the
delay.
But then today I got another email saying, �DELAYED ITEMS FROM
YOUR REGISTRY ORDER HAVE BEEN CANCELED
Dear [gellchom],
Because we did not receive your consent to proceed with the
delayed items below, they have been removed from your registry
order. You have not been charged.�
I called the store and spoke to a manager. She apologized for
the mess and the misleading email and gave me a small credit.
But the flatware is no longer available from the manufacturer,
so I had to choose another gift. There wasn�t much left on the
registry, and one thing after another appeared to be available
but wasn�t, and the system kept glitching for her. Finally,
after over an hour, some champagne flutes got ordered (how much
you wanna bet they will turn out to be unavailable, too?j. I
had to spend more, even with the credit.
Okay, that�s my tale, much too long, of shopping frustration.
Thanks for letting me vent! Talk about a first world problem.
The question is what, if anything, I should say to the bride
and groom? They already thanked me for the flatware (I presume
that they knew that�s what the gift was). And they probably
know it�s discontinued.
What, if anything, would you do?

Depending on how close you are to this couple, I probably
wouldn't say anything. Especially, considering the "thank you"
note you previously received. Obviously they are not concerned
about actually receiving the gift and thoughtfully sending a
true thank you note.

I agree. I wouldn't say anything. They already know that the
item won't be shipped and will just be very pleased you chose to
replace the gift with something else. And they are aware they
sent the thank you without receiving the item.
They may choose to send another thank you or may decide the
first suffices.

I just got an email from the bride, who, it turned out, had also
heard from the store. It seems, the bride and groom were in a
trickier spot than I was.
She wrote,
�Hi [gellchom]!
So excited to see you next week, I don�t know if you know or not
but [store] just emailed me stating the gift you purchased was
canceled! Just don�t want you to get charged for something that
isn�t arriving!

I think she handled that really beautifully. It must have been
hard not to make it sound like she was fishing for a replacement
gift, which I�m sure she wasn�t, but she didn�t know whether I
knew about the cancellation and whether I�d been charged, just
like I didn�t know that the store had informed her, too.
Meanwhile, I�d sent a replacement gift with a new gift message
saying something like �the flatware is unavailable, so enjoy
these flutes.�
I think my cousins are getting a terrific daughter-in-law!

I agree that the bride handled the canceled order situation
admirably. Just hoping she'll send you a better TY note for the
flutes. ;)

Well done by the bride! Why assume that the bride wrote the
thank-you's (unless it was signed by her)?

ummm...she did sign it. And I bet the email address was a
giveaway as well.

I think guihong was probably referring to the original, written
note. I don�t know which of them wrote it.
They are such a sweet couple, with wonderful values, and the
wedding was lovely and fun.
