Any Codenames Fans Here? An Etiquette Issue Came Up
By: Venus193 Date: January 8, 2023, 6:04 pm
---------------------------------------------------------
When the pandemic kept us all at home with our screens one of my
friends started hosting this game through Zoom. When she
discovered it was possible to add more word lists to it she
added themed lists so there are more than the original 400
words. Some are themed on holidays, seasons, etc. There are
several others in the group with premium Zoom subscriptions who
aid in hosting and we have two nights per week with regular game
sessions. This is within a Meetup group that has almost a
thousand members. We often get "guests" from other groups in
different time zones. It occurred to me that a new subject
could attract new players.
One of my guilty pleasures is True Crime; i find it fascinating.
A couple of weeks ago I asked our regular players if they liked
the idea and got a positive response from them except from the
most frequent co-host who said she would not attend. Her
opinion is that criminals should not be "celebrated" and that
she found this offensive. Nobody else seconded this opinion at
the time. I have the opposite opinion: They should be studied.
Before I spend more time compiling names, places, and media for
800 words. would this be rude to do in view of this other
member? Since the hostess of these games is not as
knowledgeable on this subject I am also planning to provide a
spreadsheet with checkmarks to help her come up with clues.

Putting them in a Codenames game is not studying.
I can see why she thinks its weird and won't attend.
I applaud her for saying her piece.
Everybody gets to decide what they'll do. She, apparently, won't
attend, and the rest of you will have to go on with the game
without her.

I don't understand this. I'm lost.
Who is "the hostess of these games"? The woman who thinks this
is inappropriate and won't attend? If so, why are you going to
hand her this spreadsheet?
And why is it on her to come up with clues? It's on each of the
players in turn, right? So why is this not something you'd give
to everyone? It seems really patronizing to give anyone a
spreadsheet of clues.
Also, the great fun of the game is that everyone comes with a
different frame of reference; a checklist kind of blows that out
of the water.
or is "the hostess of these games" someone else?
In which case, I still think it's patronizing to make a
spreadsheet.
And I think this is going to be a hard Codenames to play.
Because I think a lot of people won't know enough.
If you stick with particularly famous killers (Jack the Ripper,
the Zodiac Killer, Jeffrey Dahmer), then maybe it will not leave
so many people out.

The one who objected is not the official hostess; she is an
assistant organizer.
Anyway, since I just found out that the hostess doesn't have any
of the Office programs, this project is off.
