Dinner on the Fly
By: Lilipons Date: March 31, 2022, 6:24 pm

SIL, niece, nieces husband and the couples two teen aged sons
are visiting NYC. Like everything in our family, its a bit
chaotic. After a few days in various places and with various
accommodations, theyll be visiting us on April first. Late in
the morning theyll be dropping off their luggage at our
apartment and heading off to Coney Island. This makes sense
because our home is only three blocks away from a subway line
that goes directly to Stilwell Avenue. After Coney, theyll be
coming back to pick up their bags and head off to their hotel
near the airport before flying home in the morning.
Wed liked to take them out to dinner Friday evening and heres
where the problem lies. We have a variety of good restaurants
in the neighborhood. Our guests dont have anything in the line
of dietary restrictions. They arent picky eaters. It should
be easy but it isnt quite.
For a party of seven on a Friday evening we will have to make a
reservation. We have no idea when theyll be back and precise
scheduling is not a family virtue.
Tomorrow should be an interesting day.

In that situation I would order a bunch of Chinese food and
serve it at home.
It's the easiest to keep warm or reheat and still have it be
good; it's filling and easy to serve. Then it won't matter when
they get back. If they're tired, they can rest at bit. And if no
one is really hungry for some reason, you don't have to cook for
a week! (But you would have to eat a lot of Chinese food!)

What do you mean, "have to"? I don't understand. :)
I think this is a good idea. They might be way too pooped to go
to a restaurant.

I agree with Mary Sunshine. Ordering in is probably the best
approach. You could even ask they text when on their way back so
you could place the order. Or you could give them the choice. "I
can make reservations for dinner at 7:30 if you think you'll be
back by then or I could order in dinner for all of us? Do you
have a preference?"

This sounds like a good plan to me!

If you order Chinese food, I recommend including soup. In my
experience, I don't often eat well on vacation and would welcome
a light and soothing soup at the end of the day.

Just to wrap up the story
We made the reservation and went to a favorite Greek place of
ours. Everyone liked the food and we all had a wonderful time.
