Photo Credit... My Turn To Be The Photographer
By: DaDancingPsych Date: December 23, 2020, 3:07 pm
---------------------------------------------------------
Something happened to me today that made me think of the photo
stealing / credit thread, so maybe we've already addressed this
and no one has further interest, but I present my incident for
discussion...
Last Christmas, I learned that a local community has a unique
holiday display that I thought I would enjoy seeing. I
tentatively made plans to see it this year not knowing that the
word covid would be in my vocabulary. I wasn't sure if I should
go or not. Today, I took a day off work, masked up, and traveled
to see the outdoor display (with full intentions that if it
wasn't safe that I would immediately head back home). I am
really glad that I did and was excited to share with others! I
selected one photo and uploaded it to my Facebook page. Almost
immediately, a friend replied "Borrowing..." Because the photo
that I selected was themed around a favorite childhood character
(one that is near and dear to me), I thought maybe she wanted to
show a grandchild. I replied along the lines of "Feel free. Or
if you're in Neighborhood X, you should check-out the display.
They have done a great job at keeping it safe." This all
happened within five minutes of posting the picture, so I hadn't
really thought through anything and didn't really know what
"borrowing" meant, but I also post things knowing that the
internet can be the wild west.
The next thing that I know the photo from my day pops up on my
timeline... but it was posted by my friend. It wasn't shared
from my page (she would have had to have saved it off and repost
it as her own.) A non-mutual friend posted "Cool! Where is
this?" And my friend replied "Neighborhood X". There was no
further explanation of what the photo was or who took it. There
was no reference to my day. It suddenly felt so strange to me.
This was a photo from my special adventure that was suddenly be
passed off as someone else's experience. I can't explain why I
feel disappointed. It's not an artistic photo that I want credit
for. I just snapped a quick shot to remember the experience.
It's not like anything identifying is in the photo (like my
face); it is just a holiday display. I realize that I gave her
permission (although I don't think she was asking for it), but I
guess I didn't think through what I was giving my blessing to.
But I feel like I'm being a big baby, "All those likes are mine;
give them back!!!" But my friend didn't share in my excitement
about my day (she never actually complimented the photo or the
fun or ask any caring questions), it just got reposted like a
stock photo. I have no plans to make a big deal out of this, but
am I being weird for feeling... disappointed?

No you're not weird. I would feel the same way. Even though it's
a quick snap of other people's work, it was your experience.
I don't know much about FB, but is there a way to post a message
saying "Glad you like my photos. I had a great time looking at
the beautiful displays at Neighborhood X."

She effectively stole your photo (and experience for that
matter) and has passed it off as her own. That is actually
illegal though I know you wouldn't want to carry it that far and
since presumably she didn't make any money off it it may not be
illegal enough to pursue even if you were so inclined.
But it certainly wasn't nice of her to do that! It is always
morally and ethically wrong to take credit for someone else's
work. I would call her on it.

Yes, I could certainly do that. And I did consider it (although
I would not have had your lovely wording), but decided not to.
It felt like "Look at MEEEEE!!!" But I think the window of
opportunity is still open, so it is something to consider.

I think your assessment is accurate, but I really don't believe
that was her intention. If I do decide to call her on it, I
would want the tone to be caring. She didn't write anything with
the photo, so I really don't know what her intentions were...
which I think is adding to my strange feelings.

I follow a well known person in the rat community on the book of
faces. Recently in another rat group someone posted a photo of
her old boys from before she started watermarking her photos. I
mentioned the rats by name in the comments and messaged the
owner of the rats to let her know.. The person who posted
immediately asked me about them as they didn't know who she was,
she also commented on the post. It was all kept civil and she
has added a few new fans to her page.

I'd criticize the photo. Brutally. Just to mess with her
friends.

HAHA I love this and might just be my style! "Wow... the
lighting on that photo is awful!!!"

I really like this idea-- or something like "Glad you liked the
pics, and there's still time to go to XYZ area to see it
yourself. It's even better in person!"
I totally get your reaction. We're human and like the feelings
that come with a job well done or a relating a cool experience.
I'd be feeling the same way: a bit of "hey, that's mine, and you
took it" paired with "now I feel all petty for feeling that
way."

But, she hasn't. At least, it doesn't appear that she said she
took the photo or that she went to the location.
