| Question on fabric adhesives | |
| By: Snowfire Date: November 29, 2020, 3:19 pm | |
| --------------------------------------------------------- | |
| I'm looking for suggestions on which kind of adhesive to use for | |
| a project. | |
| Some years ago I made a framed shadowbox for DH with a picture | |
| of his Dad in uniform and his medals and rank and unit badges. | |
| It is all mounted on a board covered with velvet. The medals | |
| were easy because they pinned on. The patches were a bit more | |
| challenging. I had them attached with sticky back velcro and | |
| that seemed to be working for a while. Recently they have been | |
| falling off and the sticky stuff on the velcro seems to be dried | |
| out. I want to re-attach them but I don't want to do anything | |
| which could leak through the badges and stain or damage them. | |
| I was hoping some of you crafty types would have some | |
| suggestions for me! Hot glue or ??? | |

| If the problem is dried out 'sticky' and it has been many years | |
| perhaps you should attach more sticky back velcro again. | |
| I like Aileens craft glue but suggest you test it on a sample | |
| piece of velvet. | |
| Is it possible for someone to put a few invisible stitches on | |
| the edges of the patches to attach them? | |

| I was also going to suggest you baste them on. I think that | |
| would be far less damaging than any kind of adhesive. | |
| A nice sharp needle ought to slide through without much damage. | |
| Just make a tacking stitch or two at each corner, leaving long | |
| tails at beginning and end, and then tie the two tails at the | |
| back. | |
| (make your first stitch from the front to the back piercing the | |
| inside of the patch, then back up just outside the patch, then | |
| back down through the first hole if you can find it. Take that | |
| tail that's on the front, thread it through a needle, and stitch | |
| through the fabric just outside the patch. Then tie the ends | |
| together on the back) | |
| People often forget hand-sewing, but it's far gentler on fabric | |
| that you think. | |
