| Post a picture of a gift you gave | |
| By: Mara Jade Date: October 23, 2020, 2:08 pm | |

| I am doing a secret Santa online, and I'm making a gift for the | |
| person I was assigned. The person is on facebook and in a few | |
| fan groups I'm in, but we are not friends and don't know each | |
| other. The gift is customized to the fandom we are both in. | |
| (Like we are both Dr. Who fans, and I'm making a Dr. Who scarf, | |
| something like that.) | |
| Would it be appropriate after sending the gift, and waiting some | |
| amount of time, to post a picture of the gift in the fan group? | |
| If it turns out well I'd like to show off a little, but I also | |
| don't want to steal anyone's thunder and post a picture first. | |
| How long should I wait? Or should I just post on my own facebook | |
| page? Or not at all? | |

| Post it on your personal facebook page, and give the recipient a | |
| chance to post it on the group page. | |

| When she receives the gift you made will she also then find out | |
| who her Secret Santa was? I have no idea how this works, but | |
| I suspect that if she likes the gift (and of course she will) | |
| she herself would post a picture of it and say "Guys! Look at | |
| this! See this fantastic thing Mara Jade made for me? I'm so | |
| impressed by the quality of the craftsmanship and I just really, | |
| really love this!" | |

| If you leave out any reference to giving to a member of the | |
| group, I think it would be okay. | |
| Present as more of a showing off something I made instead of | |
| showing off what wonderful gift-giver I am. | |
| Secret Santa type gifting events are notoriously lopsided. Some | |
| people are wonderful gifters and some are, ahem, remarkably bad. | |
| I've had enough lousy ones that I dont participate anymore, but | |
| if I did, i wouldn't necessarily want to see how much better | |
| everyone else's Santa was. | |
| Yes. I'm an old grump. | |

| Since this is an online gift exchange for an online group, I'm | |
| thinking that posting photos of the gifts received will just be | |
| part of the "event". I'd actually find it unusual if the | |
| receivers of the gifts didn't post "Look at the adorable knitted | |
| baby yoda that Mara sent me!" It would be like being in an in | |
| person secret santa gift exchange, opening, closing it and not | |
| showing anyone what was given. Be the first to start the trend. | |
| When you get yours, share a photo with a compliment and thank | |
| you to the giver. I'm sure it will start a chain reaction. | |
| If the recipient doesn't post a photo after others do, then wait | |
| till a few weeks after Christmas and then post to one of your | |
| fan groups with just saying it was something you made. You don't | |
| need to mention that it is was for a gift. | |
| Or you could go the other way. Post when you finish that it is | |
| something you just made. Don't mention why. And hopefully the | |
| recipient will see it and be excited once that it ended up being | |
| a gift to them. | |

| If it does turn out well, I'd like to post a photo so other | |
| people can make their own if they like it. I want to contribute | |
| to groups I'm in. I'll definitely wait until well after | |
| Christmas before posting, and it's a good idea to not mention it | |
| was a gift. But making it for someone you've never met, it's | |
| possible they don't like it or they just don't post photos on | |
| Facebook, I don't want to wait forever for someone to maybe post | |
| it or not. | |
| I have the option of telling the person who I am. I'm leaning | |
| towards not telling. | |
