Re: Innocent Lies your Parents Told You.

My parents didnt tell us those things but of course we heard
them from other kids,
I dont include the idea of not going swimming until after an
hour eating because I think even medical people firmly believed
that. The others made no scientific sense even to my young
brain. One I almost believed was that swallowed gum would pack
up the appendix and we would have to have an operation. Then I
figured Mom would have told me because she let me have gum
without that warning.
There were a whole bunch of superstitions about menses we heard
in fifth grade, too. The only one I remember was that a perm
wouldnt take or a tooth filling wouldnt last if done at that
time.

My dad wouldn't let us have gum, because it would pull all the
fillings out of our teeth. But apparently it was okay for other
kids to have their filling pulled out, because at Halloween, we
would have to take all the gum out of our haul and give it away
at school. On the up side (IMO because I don't like how it looks
when people chew it), I never got into the habit of chewing gum.
My dad and my Gramp's big thing was 'worms'. Anything bad would
give you 'worms.' Which as a kid, meant earthworms and ew, I
don't want them in me.

My mom wouldn't let us sit on the grass wearing shorts. She
seriously thought it would give us urinary tract infections.
A family friend of ours told us that you could set cruise
control and the car would drive itself.

your family friend was just off by a few decades - I am sure
that is coming some day.

That sitting on the grass makes me think of 1) my Nana, who said
sitting on the cold ground would give you piles; and 2) my
Russian co-worker who said sitting on the cold ground would make
you infertile (or cause other problems with your
ovaries....apparently this is a common myth with Russians).

Yup!
I was always advised not to sit on concrete, or anything cold
because it was bad for the kidneys. I actually strained my back
yesterday. I went to visit my parents, who had friends visiting
from across the country. I went to the freezer for an ice pack,
and immediately got people scolding me for using ice on my back.
"It'll chill your kidneys!!!!!!!!!" (yes, there was that level
of exclamation) ;)
I suppose it makes sense back when people didn't really know how
illnesses were caught or transmitted.

Boy! That is scary. I had a terrible backache and used ice on
it. I finally ended up in ICU for 17 days with kidney failure.
It was the systemic infections that caused the trouble, but I
could see how if someone heard about a couple of cases like
mine, they could think it was the ice, misunderstanding cause
and effect.

I don't know the validity of this story, may be an urban legend.
Back in the day when cruise control first came out there was a
story going around about a retired couple who bought a motor
home thinking to travel the country. On the first leg of their
trip, husband set the cruise control and went to the back to
make himself a sandwich. Fortunately nobody was seriously hurt.

I'm so glad you were okay, Luci. Kidney failure is nothing to
mock or joke about. That being said, I'm certainly not going to
mention your story to my parents (or their elderly friends), or
I'll never be able to ice my lower back again! :D
