Covetous Prayers
By: guest24 Date: September 24, 2018, 11:58 am

Is anyone up for a discussion about prayers? Some of you know
that I was called by God over 12 years ago to study full time
Biblical Love. One of those studies was about how to pray a
prayer of Love. It was an interesting study to say the least
but what struck me is what I call covetous prayers. James 4:3
says....When you ask, you do not receive, because you ask with
wrong motives, that you may spend what you get on your
pleasures.
So the question I want to present is, do we pray covetous
prayers and if so how can we correct this so that our prayers
have the power of God behind them?

[/quote]Great topic Lori. I prayed in times of trouble only and
when I wanted or needed something and never really speaking with
God. At some point, probably when I renewed my faith in about
2010, I began praying for wisdom and for other people and
situations I would come across. I took the selfishness out of my
prayers and finally talked with God as a Father and a friend. I
never prayed for comfort or things of this world and my prayers
have been answered over time since then.
So I agree with the thread title because we covet things of this
world and many prayers are selfish and covetous in nature,
sometimes without us being fully aware of what we are praying
for.

this too is what I have come to understand. We can know what
God wants for us, it's in the Bible. So why when we pray do we
so often simply speak of the things we want rather than the
things God wants.
One example I gave not long ago is how all the miracles in Jesus
ministry were for the purpose of revelation. So why when we
pray for healing do we fail to pray for revelation of God's
purpose and will in relation to that? Another example I
recently spoke about was a brother friend who was struggling
with something, so we prayed that the situation would be as God
wanted it and that the man would have peace. Sure enough, the
God of peace worked out the situation and gave the man peace.
I don't think it is wrong to pray for and about what we want but
I also think that a prayer of Love includes with it the growing
and maturing and wonders of what God Himself says He wants for
us.

God is waiting on us to seek after Him daily in prayer and Bible
meditations. Through the Holy Spirit we can be comforted by His
presence in our lives. Seeking after God leads to a blessed life
with peace and joy no matter the situation.
#1) Seek God and nothing else matters
But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these
things will be given to you as well (Matthew 6:33).
#2) Seek God and you will find Him
But if from there you seek the Lord your God, you will find him
if you seek him with all your heart and with all your soul
(Deuteronomy 4:29).
#3) Seek God regardless of your life situation
But Hezekiah prayed for them, saying, May the Lord, who is
good, pardon everyone who sets their heart on seeking Godthe
Lord, the God of their ancestorseven if they are not clean
according to the rules of the sanctuary And the Lord heard
Hezekiah and healed the people (2 Chronicles 30:18-20).
#4) Seek God because Hes looking for you
The Lord looks down from heaven on all mankind to see if there
are any who understand, any who seek God (Psalm 14:2).
#5) Seek God with all your being
You, God, are my God, earnestly I seek you; I thirst for you,
my whole being longs for you, in a dry and parched land where
there is no water (Psalm 63:1).
#6) Seek God before He has to get your attention
Whenever God slew them, they would seek him; they eagerly
turned to him again (Psalm 78:34).
#7) Seek God because He has arranged for you to do so
God did this so that they would seek him and perhaps reach out
for him and find him, though he is not far from any one of us.
For in him we live and move and have our being. As some of
your own poets have said, We are his offspring. (Acts
17:27-28).
#8) Seek God even when you dont feel like it
There is no one righteous, not even one; there is no one who
understands; there is no one who seeks God. (Romans 3:10-11)
#9) Seek God because He rewards you for it
And without faith it is impossible to please God, because anyone
who comes to him must believe that he exists and that he rewards
those who earnestly seek him. (Hebrews 11:6)
#10) Seek God so you will know what to do
But Jehoshaphat also said to the king of Israel, First seek the
counsel of the Lord. (1 Kings 22:5)

Realizing that I only prayed for covetous nonsense for most of
my life is part of the reason I left Christianity. I almost
always got what I asked for, but I felt no gratitude and I tried
making empty deals with God. I was totally ungrateful in my
prayers and the praise I gave to God was insincere. I didnt
like that about myself. I came back the day that I realized that
I could genuinely praise God, no matter the outcome of a
situation, that I could be ever grateful, no matter if I
understood the situation or not.

I see people all the time that pray covetous prayers then get
upset with God for not "answering their prayers" seems to me
that He answered by saying that "I am not happy that you only
bring me covetous prayers when what I ask for is your heart".
I think if we could get a glimpse of who God really is, we
wouldn't be able to do anything but live in a constant state of
recognizing Him and wanting to be in His presence.
