                   Texting from the other side of the table

My dad has often lamented the scene he sees whenever he goes out to a
restaurant. It is inevitable that a nearby table of two or more diners will
all be sitting in rapt silence, staring into small lit screens of smart
phones and not engaging in conversation at all. Or rather, conversation with
the fellow diners—for all he knows, they could be communicating with others,
maybe at other restaurants.

It's amusing to note that this isn't a modern phenomenon (mahna mahna) [3].
