� PRESTIGE AND THE 50 DISK LIMIT �
��ĳ
� �
� Two months ago, 5 major groups got together and formed an organization, �
� the SPA, in order to set certain standards for the games cracking scene. �
� One of these standards is the 50 disk limit. All groups, including the �
� original 5, have held to this standard since it was first initiated. �
� The original 5 were Hybrid, Prestige, Razor, Mantis, and Napalm. Only �
� three of these groups still exist, and Hybrid has pulled out of the SPA. �
� This means that only RZR and PSG are still part of the alliance. When �
� the SPA was formed, it was agreed that 5 groups should be part of it in �
� order to make important decisions that affect the direction of the PC �
� scene. It then follows that important decisions such as the disk limit �
� should not be discussed until the SPA's ranks are replenished. �
� �
� Having said all that, Prestige feels it should inform the public about �
� an event that could hold some importance for all of us. In the last �
� month or so, Prestige has dominated over the other groups, as we are �
� wont to do. Coincidentally, the two other biggest groups (Razor and �
� Hybrid) have approached Prestige about "voting" on a new 65 disk limit. �
� Prestige feels that the 50 disk limit we have now is excessive, but we �
� agreed to it in the spirit of compromise two months ago. Now two of �
� the original members of the SPA are trying to overturn the limit, in �
� what we feel is a fit of desperation. If the limit is raised, many �
� more games will be "rippable" under the disk limit. This, in turn, �
� will increase Hybrid and Razor's chances of putting up a fair fight �
� against PSG, which as we said earlier, has been dominating in every �
� aspect. �
� �
� Hybrid and Razor will argue that quality games like DaggerFall can be �
� released under a new 65 disk limit. This is, of course, true. Just �
� as true, however, is the fact that there are many more games of poor �
� quality that will come out under this new limit as well. This is not �
� the only bad aspect of a larger disk limit. Perhaps you have noticed �
� that many large (30+ disks) releases are quickly re-released as less �
� than 10 disks by what we like to call "no-name" groups. Even Prestige �
� is guilty of putting out games as larger than they need to be, in the �
� interest of saving time so that we can win on the release. I can't �
� defend our actions to you, but I can tell you that EVERY time the disk �
� limit has increased, the ripping quality has summarily gone DOWN. So, �
� where you now see a 50 disk version of some freeware repackage of Euro �
� Fighter 2000 "Tactops" like Razor put out a few weeks ago, you'll see �
� a 65 disk retread of the same crap. Do you really want this? �
� �
� By the same token, a 58 disk version of DaggerFall is not likely to �
� include many of the features you would expect from this kind of game. �
� You probably won't get sound, music, animations important to the �
� development of the game's plot, and God knows what else. Do you really �
� want to download a 58 disk release only to find out that you should �
� have gone out and bought the game in the first place? Unlikely. �
� �
� The courier groups, who thrive on bytes uploaded to a site or board, �
� might enjoy a larger release to trade. I would ask them to consider �
� the sites and boards they trade on - they have limited disk space. I �
� would ask them to consider the users that download the games - its bad �
� enough getting stuck with 30 disks of crapware, but you'll be doubly �
� annoyed if that 30 disks turns into 60, with full animations of the �
� company's logo as well as an aerial view of the disk duplication �
� facility where your pirated game originated. �
� �
� But seriously, folks. The 50 disk limit is more than generous for what �
� we do today. Look at the past 20 or 30 releases, how many of those are �
� even in the 40-50 disk range? Only a handful, and most of those were �
� not worth downloading in the first place. If we open the door to a 65 �
� disk limit, we'll get a small handful of quality games, true. But the �
� price we have to pay, in the form of bad ripping and more bad games, is �
� simply not worth what Hybrid and Razor are trying to sell. �
