1.  Introduction
================

"BGM" simply means "background music".  Increasingly, a game's BGM has
a important part of its appeal.  By the mid-80s, arcade game BGMs were
earning their place in popular culture, to the point where it was viable
to release them on CD.  Nowadays, hundreds of BGMs for arcade and home
system games are available on CD.  (For the moment, this FAQ will deal
arcade game BGMs only.)

Many BGM CDs contain more than the BGM itself;  voices, sound effects
("SE") and "arrange" (remixed) versions.  "Image Album" CDs are re-workings
of the original music, usually with different instrumentation.

The main manufacturer of game music BGM CDs is Pony Canyon/Scitron, who
represents Taito, Sega, Jaleco, Nintendo, SNK, Namco, Capcom, Tecmo, Bandai,
Data East, Irem, Nichibutsu, Imagineer, Ikki Nakamura, Atari, Toaplan, UPL,
Kaneko, Seibu, Technos Japan, Video System.   Pony Canyon/Scitron also
carries game videos and laserdiscs (VHS/NTSC) and game cassingles.  Lesser
manufacturers are Alfa Records (representing Konami and Hudson Soft) and
Victor.

For information about buying and looking up BGM CDs, refer to the
Sources section at the end of this FAQ.

3. SOURCES
==========

Publications:

-  Record Map '94.  ISBN4-313-88063-1.  Zeikomi Teika.  Y1400.
A comprehensive guide to used CD storess in Japan, including 46 stores
that do mail order.  Such stores will send you big CD catalogs if you
give them stamps and envelopes.  Some stores will give you discounts
if you show them this guide.

-  Konpakuto Disuku Sou Katarogu '94.  ISBN No.?  Zeikomi Teika.  Y3000.
Weighs 2 kg and lists about 70,000 CDs, every CD produced in Japan.
Published by Ongaku Shuppansha.  If you order this directly from Japan,
pick seamail!  Otherwise postage will cost more than the book itself.
The larger Japanese record shops carry and sell this catalog.

-  CD Journal (monthly).  Ongaku Shuppansha.
This is the monthly equivalent of the Konpakuto Disuku Sou Katarogu.
All CDs released in Japan, month by month.  On sale in major Japanese
bookstores in the USA. Also covers audio equipment.

-  Gamest Magazine (monthly).  Shinseisha.  Y550.
Reviews all major arcade game BGM CDs released each month, and
includes a top 10 best sellers chart.  Also, it's absolutely packed
with info on just about all aspects of the Japanese arcade game scene.
Shinseisha also publishes arcade game guidebooks, videos and occasionally
a CD catalog (apparently).  Game CDs for home systems are usually
reviewed in magazines devoted to those systems.

(In general, Asahiya gets more new items in more regularly, with a
slightly larger selection of slightly more obscure goods.  Their prices
are also higher than Kinos, with most Y3000 costing $37.00 plus tax.
Asahiya also has a no return policy if the seal on the cd is broken.)

(If you write to Pony Canyon asking for their catalog, address the
letter, not the envelope, to Fuyuki Ando.  He is the main director
of the game BGM CDs.  Tell him where you got this address and ask
him if he would consider wider, ie. overseas, distribution of BGM CDs.
If you ask for a catalog, you must include a self-addressed envelope
and adequate postage - IRCs or Japanese stamps - as is usual with this
kind of thing.)
