How to play ADVENTIONS games on your favorite machine:
The archives in this directory do not contain executables that you can
run directly on your machine. Instead, they contain TADS ".GAM" files
that can be used on any machine that runs TADS 2.
TADS is a programming language and run-time environment specifically
designed for interactive fiction. You need to get a copy of the "TADS
run-time" executable for your system to play these games.
Fortunately, this archive site is also home to TADS as well as
ADVENTIONS games. So you can get the TADS run-time executable for your
machine from if-archive/programming/tads, on this site.
TADS currently runs on a wide range of machines, and the list of
supported platforms is now growing very rapidly. Announcements about
new ports usually appear in the Usenet newsgroups rec.arts.int-fiction
and rec.games.int-fiction.
As of this writing, the following machines are supported:
PC and comaptibles
Macinotosh
Atari ST/TT/Falcon
Sun Sparcstation
Sun 3
DECstation (MIPS)
Amiga (in the works)
NeXT (in the works)
Linux (in the works)
386/BSD (in the works)
Macintosh owners should either get the special Mac versions (in the
mac directory above this one), or set the file type and creator of
the .GAM files to TADG and TADR respectively.
Since there is no completely standard archive format, there may be
several different copies of each archive. Hopefully you'll have access
to one of the archivers used on these files.
