This is a preview of the Live (i.e. bootable
directly from CD-ROM - without installing) edition
of Aurox Linux 10.1. Aurox 10.1 is under development
and final version is expected December 2004.
Aurox Linux is a free Linux distribution available
on Internet and on CD-ROMs published with quarterly
Aurox Linux magazine in many countries (and with other
magazines, too).
With this preview the new release of X Windows System
(XOrg 6.8.1) is included. NVidia binary drivers 61.11
are installed and some experimental features activated
on NVidia cards.
NVidia users can try window shading
and translucency - the required tools are in directory
/opt/xorg. Window shadows should work with some other
accelerated cards, e.g. ATI Radeon. Please, have in mind
these are experimental features and may cause system
instability.
Icons "Shadows" and "Translucency" are provided on the desktop;
dblclick "Shadows" first, then optionally "Translucency"
Aurox Live 1.9.0 contains:
- XOrg 6.8.1 - the latest implementation of the X Window System
- KDE 3.3 (default graphical desktop)
- Web browsers Mozilla 1.7.3 and KDE's Konqueror
- Graphical e-mail client: KMail
- Office suite OpenOffice 1.1.2
- Multimedia support: sound and movie players
Kaboodle, Noatune, Xine (libs 1.0.0 RC6a)
- Non-accelerated games (KDE games)
- Example of a game using hardware accelaration: Chromium
- Easy to use graphical ftp client (gFTP)
- SMB client (3.0.5) for accessing Windows shares
- Interface for starting/stopping services
- support for multiple languages (Polish, German, French, Spanish,
Italian, English) selectable at start
- SSH servers allow remote access to machine
By default 'nvidia' binary driver is used instead of XOrg's 'nv'.
To use opensource driver, start CD with:
aurox xmodule=nv
typed at the boot prompt. If you have problems with
graphical modes, safe bet would be:
nofb xmodule=vesa
for most of video cards.
The XOrg's X Window Server can start without configuration
file (it automatically configures itself if no config file is found).
This may result in better configuration for your video card
(e.g. better resolution). If you have problems with default
configuration of video card in Aurox Live; try to boot with
following command:
aurox xauto
With xauto option, NVidia cards will not have 3D acceleration.
