Your thing seems to work fine, do you know how to do virtual ftp sites with wu-ftpd?

I already have 20 IP addresses resolving on the same host machine...

Thanx,

I went in from my browser (netscape) with
ftp://electric.rain.aic.net.au/pub and it gave the standard look I see
with all ftp listings under a browser so I imagine <A
HREF="ftp://electric.rain.aic.net.au/pub"> would work as well...

Thanks Claude, that was the reason my server did not work....
I thought ftpd used ftpacces file whithout forcing it with -a flag.....

Our Linux version doesn't have this man page, so I took it from SunOS.
It should apply to most systems running some flavor of UNIX, hope it helps.

NETRC(5)                  FILE FORMATS                   NETRC(5)

NAME
netrc - file for ftp remote login data

DESCRIPTION
The .netrc file contains data for logging  in  to  a  remote
host  over  the network for file transfers by ftp(1C).  This
file resides in the user's home  directory  on  the  machine
initiating the file transfer.  Its permissions should be set
to disallow read access by group and others (see chmod(1V)).

The following tokens are recognized; they may  be  separated
by SPACE, TAB, or NEWLINE characters:

    machine name
Identify a remote machine name.  The auto-login process
searches  the  .netrc  file  for  a  machine token that
matches the remote machine specified on the ftp command
line  or  as an open command argument.  Once a match is
made, the subsequent .netrc tokens are processed, stop-
ping  when  the EOF is reached or another machine token
         is encountered.

    login name
Identify a user on the remote machine.  If  this  token
is  present,  the  auto-login  process  will initiate a
         login using the specified name.

    password string
Supply a password.   If  this  token  is  present,  the
auto-login  process will supply the specified string if
the remote server requires a password as  part  of  the
login  process.   Note: if this token is present in the
.netrc file, ftp will abort the auto-login  process  if
the .netrc is readable by anyone besides the user.

    account string
Supply an additional account password.  If  this  token
is  present,  the  auto-login  process  will supply the
specified string if the remote server requires an addi-
tional account password, or the auto-login process will
initiate an ACCT command if it does not.

    macdef name
Define a macro.  This token functions as the ftp macdef
command  functions.  A macro is defined with the speci-
fied name; its contents begin with the next .netrc line
and  continue  until  a  null line (consecutive NEWLINE
characters) is encountered.  If a macro named  init  is
defined,  it is automatically executed as the last step
         in the auto-login process.

EXAMPLE
    The command:

machine ray login demo password mypassword

allows an autologin to the machine ray using the login  name
    demo with password mypassword.

FILES
    ~/.netrc

Check your browser - configuration, had the same problem with wu_ftpd
on a linux-machine (distribution S.u.S.E).
Try:
application/octet-stream exe,bin (as file-extension) and save as
action
in the browser-conf.
If it won't work, add connection portnumber (21?) for example:
<A HREF="ftp://bla.bla.bla.bla:21/pub/bla.exe">

This same information is available (with extensions) with the ncftp
ftp client which is a much friendlier program than vanilla ftp.

Yeah, when you use the http to down load a file it usually has a mime
type defined that converts it to the octet-stream since your ftp
doesn't do that you have to rely on the fact that the brower is
configured propery.  I know a few releases of netscape did not have
.exe or .bin set to the mime type of octet stream

I am going to try the other solution to see if that helps.

Check your browser - configuration, had the same problem with wu_ftpd
on a linux-machine (distribution S.u.S.E).
Try:
application/octet-stream exe,bin (as file-extension) and save as
action
in the browser-conf.
If it won't work, add connection portnumber (21?) for example:
<A HREF="ftp://bla.bla.bla.bla:21/pub/bla.exe">

Subject: WWW list archive searcher doesn't work?

I've been trying to use

http://freeway.oact.hq.nasa.gov/cgi-bin/pursuit-beta

for several days now, but it doesn't work. I get various
errors in different browsers from within different domains,
so I know it's not a problem on my end.

Anyone know what's up or have any information on alternate
ways to search the archives?

I've asked a question last week to this list, but no answers
are forthcoming (perhaps they will be) but I reckon that
searching the archive might find some nugget(s) of information
not found in the FAQ's.

TIA

If you wanna have fun, change the ftp:// link to a http:// link, and
forget ftp altogether.

Although you may have reasons for using ftp:// URL's over http:// URL's
(logging?), any decent web server should be able to suffice in lieu of
anonymous ftp transfers.

Most large ftp sites, oak.oakland.edu, www.winsite.com, etc use http://
links almost exclusively.

Out of necessity and not knowing if one already existed I wrote a Perl
(vers 5.001) script to change/add passwords to the ftpgroups file.  It can
be retrieved at mintaka.iern.disa.mil.  The name is 'ftpgrp' and is in
/pub.  Rudimentary testing has been done and it appears to work as
intended but modifications/improvements may be necessary or desired.  So
use at your own risk.

Synopsis:

       ftpgrp group realgroup

Prompts for password with a retype request.

If group and realgroup are present, the password is changed.

If they are not, then a new entry is created and appended to the file.

A temporary file is used during modification.

your browser must be configured for .zip files, but i would like to do it
so no  matter if someones browser isnt configured correctly, it still
serves it up as binary/octet-stream:)

Greetings,

Well here is it s 6am MST (been at the office since 11pm MST.. I have been
having some weird problems with my WUFTP 2.4 file..

It seems once I get the ftpd compiled it seems to work..  Except when
someone goes to upload a file..  the 1st file gets sent no problem (if you
can get a dile sent)  ANyways right after the ftp server gets the 1st
file and it has completed.. You type in any other commands and it gives an
error (it seems the ftpd server CORE dumped right after it finished
uploaded (or downloading) a file.

I am not an expert a examining core files so I am turing to the list for
help..  I am completely baffled.. and have spent 18 hours straigt trying
to fix it..

SO now I am turning to the list for help//

Thanks!

I'm trying to install wu-ftp on a pentium running BSDI.
Since it's a beta version of wuftp, I want to set it up
so that its running on another port (other than 20-21)
so that I can test it before finally put it into full
use.  What do I have to change in the source?
/etc/inetd.conf? /etc/services? Thanks.

Since ftp is a special case with two port assignments I can't be certain
this will work since I am not certain how the inetd determines the data
port.  But I would try the following:

In inetd.conf add something like:

ftptest stream tcp nowait root /usr/etc/in.ftpd in.ftpd

In /etc/services add the following:

ftptest         4021/tcp        command port
ftptest-data    4020/tcp        data port

The key is the name 'ftptest' which associates the port assignment
in the /etc/services file.  Make certain the choice of ports in
/etc/services (4021 and 4020 above) are from the local use list and
don't conflict with other port assignments.

Hope this helps.
Jim

Hi

I'm trying to run wu-ftpd on a AIX 4.1.3 based system and have some =
troubles.
When a ftp user issus the "ls " command everything is ok but when the =
command issued is " ls -l " wu-ftpd returns nothing and a system error =
is generated. This error is :

       PSIGDELIVERY
       PROGRAM INTERRUPTION DURING SIGNAL SEND
Probable cause : SEGMENT REFERENCE INCORRECT

The syslog reports :
       command : NLST -l (minus L)
       NLST -l
       <---- 150=20
Opening ASCII mode data connection for /bin/ls
       <---- 226

Please let me know if someone have already heard about this problem and =
how can I solve it.

Many Thanks

I don't know about the error (and whether its the same as mine was)
because I still haven't been able to log commands properly. But, the
output is the same. Make sure you have a /dev/tcp and a /dev/zero file
under ~ftp. these are the two output files, and they should be created
with minor and major numbers set as the corresponding files under /dev/

Hope it works

As stated in the faq, this is due to either not having the ls command
statically linked in your ~ftp/bin or not having the libraries defined
correctly in ~ftp/lib. For AIX, you need copies of libc.a and libcurses.a.

Good luck,
David

On our machine cc and gcc are one and the same because Solaris does
not come with a C compiler anymore.

Could someone elaborate on this possibility and what I can do about it?
Can I rebuild libsupport.a from somewhere?  Who's is it?  Is is part of
the GNU compiler or Solaris?

I am using GNU ar 2.4.

The academ 2.4.2 beta works just fine on BSDI 2.1.

Note that if you install 2.4.2 beta on 2.1 you loose the login class
functionality that BSDI incorporated in to the wu-ftpd released with 2.1.
It would be nice if this functionality could be incorporated in to the
2.4.2 package.

Build a patch kit and send it to [email protected]. I will consider
adding it to beta 11, which is just about to go out the door.

i have no idea what the error was caused by - I was merely trying to point you in the
right direction. libsupport.a can be rebuilt if u type "build clean" and "build sol".
However, I fear u may have the same problem when u rebuild the package. If u do, I
have placed a libsupport.a file in my ftp directories which was built for solaris
2.x. If u want to get this, put it in your ~/wu-ftpd-2.4/support directory and type
"build sol" and see if it works.

The file can be retrieved from the anonymous account at

       ftp://nasc.nott.ac.uk/

       directory

       /pub/incoming/lib/libsupport.a

       and don't forget "its binary"......

The file will only be there for a few days.....

Hope this helps

Mike

Subject: hanging daemons problem
X-Sun-Charset: US-ASCII
X-Listprocessor-Version: 7.1 -- ListProcessor by CREN

Hi,

I am developing a project using the ftp daemon version wu-ftpd-2.4.
However, I am facing a problem which I haven't been able to solve.

The problem is that, sometimes when the ftp clients fail to close the
connections gracefully (e.g.  clients exit SUDDENLY), it will cause
the ftp daemons to hang indefinitely on my system.  It looks like the
daemon's timer does not work under this circumstance.

I would very much appreciate if anyone can give me some hints on
this, or perhaps some workarounds...

Thanks very much!

Yep, I've seen and I've fixed (using a patch provided by one of the reader's
of this mailist).  I've attached it below.  You might have to modify the
header part, since it has been set up for SunOS.
