I can think of two alternatives (more may exist):
1. Give the "ftp" account a password and give that password to the
user that will administer it. This way he/she can "su" to the ftp
account and make any changes needed. This may introduce some
security problems, though, if the password is easy to guess or is
somehow compromised.
2. Put both the ftp account and the user who will administer it in the
same group (you could create an ftp group) and give all the files
in the ftp hierarchy owner and group write permissions. This way,
he/she could make changes without even su-ing to another account.
Hope this helps.

I've installed wu-ftpd 2.4 on a AIX 3.2.5 machine. Everything is ok except
all Korn shell users are rejected. Is there a mechanism to control the user
access according to his/her shell setting?
Thanks in advance.

Ward,
item 5. of "SOME NOTES ABOUT THE FTP SERVER" in the INSTALL file says:
"Make sure that you have a /etc/shells that lists all valid shells on
your system. Otherwise, those who have shells not listed there will
not be able to log in. [Yes, this is the expected behaivor.]"
hope this solves your problem.
regards, charles

No, no. You're supposed to say 'quit' to ftp. You say 'unsubscribe' to
listproc, and that's the OTHER list.

I've just got wu-ftpd up and running and I noticed all the times in
the log file are ahead of what they should be by 4hrs - anybody have
any thoughts??
All my transfers to to /usr/adm/xferlog and all the ftp commands go to
/tmp/daemon.log - the times in both of the files are wrong.
I also noticed that when I connect to the ftp server, the time
reported to the client is also off by 4 hours. I'm running version 2.4
of wu-ftpd.
Thanks in advance,

Many thanks to your quick response for my question. As all of you
indicated that /etc/shell should define all shells remote user
can use. Simply only BSD UNIX system seem to use that file here. I
found that on SunOS 4.x and Ultrix systems but no such file exists
on AIX, IRIX(SGI) and Solaris 2.x(SUN) --- three major architectures
we use here. Built-in ftpd does don't use this file.
So the further question will be which file native ftpd uses and is there
a potential security hole here? Most SysV'ish UNIX sytems improved security
and reduced the exposure of some important system files.
Thanks again,

This is the most valuable suggestion I got from Bill Pemberton of UVa. Thank you,
Bill!
I re-built 2.4 wu-ftpd and it fixed the problem I had before. I hope it will be
an official patch for 2.4 version.
How about Solaris and IRIX? It should be done in the same way.

As suggested in reply [42] this is because the times are being recorded
in GMT (which is what Unix systems really work on). If you want times to
be represented according to your local time zone, you need to ensure that
the localtime file is put in the correct place under the chroot'd anonymous
ftp environment. For example, under SunOS 4.1.x create the directory
~ftp/usr/share/lib/zoneinfo and copy the file /usr/share/lib/zoneinfo/localtime
into it. (Under Solaris 2.x I think it may be a little more convoluted,
though I'm not sure, but it's the same principle). Other systems (eg OSF)
tend to make life easier by putting the timezone files in /etc/zoneinfo, but
the file you want is still called localtime. If you can't work out where
the timezone files are on your system, try looking at the end of the zic(8)
man page.
This is an FAQ -- IMHO it really is about time the WU people included better
installation instructions with their ftpd, or at least compiled an FAQ
list and included that. This mailing list is not a suitable alternative,
as newcomers have no idea what has been discussed previously.
The server is good, though, chaps! I don't wish to seem ungrateful... :-)
regards, charles

We are setting up an ftp archive and I am interested in finding out what
policies other sites have for dealing with uploaded material. For example:
- do you check the software for viruses
- do you check the contents of text files
- if a trojan horse is uploaded what action would you take against the
uploader.
Any relevant comment would be appreciated and I am particularly
interested in UK sites interpretation of UK law.
Regards,
Soghra

I am using wu-ftpd-2.4(1) on an AIX v3.2.5 system. I am having no problems
with anonymous FTP....however, it seems that "real" users who are not members
of the group "system" are able to get files owned by *.system with a chmod of
0640 (-rw-r-----). Example:
ls -lsa /etc/base*
8 -rw-r----- 1 root system 6614 Oct 9 1993 /etc/basecust
1. I created a generic user, member of the groups "others" and "staff"
2. If I ftp to the server running wu-ftpd, I can get the file /etc/basecust
(or any file owned by *.system with a chmod of 0640).
3. If I ftp to another v3.2.5 system running the standard ftpd, I can not
get this file.
4. If I login as this user I can not edit/copy those files. The user gets
the generic "permission denied".
5. If you change the files to another group (cron, printq, etc) you are not
able to get these files.
This bothers me. Someone give me a clue. Is this happening to other
systems? What else should I look for? Is this a massive config error
on my part?
Thanks in advance.

I've tried some more experiments.....the problem also existed on my system
with v2.3 of wu-ftpd also.....my ftpaccess file has nothing in it pertaining
to any type of groups.....(ftpaccess file shown below)
Could someone else who is running wu-ftpd on an AIX system see if they can
duplicate my problem/results? Thanks...

hello,
I am having trouble with the -t parameter in my inetd.conf for
the ftpd entry. The timeout does not seem to work, the folowing
is my inetd.conf entry for ftpd:
ftp stream tcp nowait root /usr/etc/in.tcpd in.ftpd -l -t300
as you can see I am also running the tcp_wrapper, which works great.
Any ideas or suggestions.....
thanks
eric

I received this from Bill Pemberton.....as noted in the following text,
whenever a generic user would PUT a file, it was owned by "user.system"
regardless of whether or not that user was a member of the group "system".
This hack fixed my problem Wth Bill's permission maybe this could be
included in the release versions if it is not already.
Many, many thanks to Bill Pemberton and Brad Burdick for their help.....

Here it is. This also includes my getusershell() change that allows wu-ftpd
to get the valid shells the AIX way (instead of reading /etc/shells).

Dean -
Sorry this is a bit late, but you wanted to know about anon users
being able to do an ls or dir. If you haven't already
got this one, put a copy of ls in the ~/ftp/bin directory.

It's there, and works when I ftp to it myself here or from two other
sites that I can telnet into to test that way.
What program are you using to ftp into our site?

I just check on my SGI machines.. and we don't have that zic man page
or /usr/share/lib/zoneinfo..etc.. So what else that the ftpd look
for?? on SGI there is a file /etc/TIMEZONE which represents the
correct date for that machine.. I tried to copy it over /etc/ but it
still doesn't work. The time is still messed up by 4hrs..

I agree.. We need and FAQ for this group. The Installation instruction
is not that clear..

Greetings,
Looking at the traffic on this list, it appears that an FAQ is in order.
Please send me email if you think we can get started on putting this
together. I assume I am not *breaking protocol* in any way:)-

I'd love an FAQ. Things that might be good to include:
- reminders about static linking (re: anonymous account) and how to find
out what libraries are required for a program
- how to set up FTP groups (especially how to create the password)
- what ~ftp/dev/* files are required for various operating systems
Those are the ones that gave me the most trouble.

About the idea of a FAQ. It's a good one, although somehow I doubt it
will stop the folks that continually ask about /dev/* problems. It will
make the reply shorter, though ;-)
There is an anon-FTP faq written by Christopher Klaus and posted to
comp.security.{unix,misc} regularly. I would suggest that either reference
should be made to it or information from it should be included. It
includes /dev/* information as well as other good advice.

What would be nice is if whoever does the FAQ gets permission to use parts
of the anon-ftp FAQ.

You must copy the file ftpd.h to /usr/include/arpa . There is a short
discussion of this in the installation file.

This is a classic example of a FAQ -- I think it's been asked about 3-4
times in the past month! It is also (ironically) one of the
few problems actually described in the WU-ftpd installation instructions.
I suppose that it highlights an unfortunate aspect of human nature: even
if you provide people with FAQs/Instructions, you can't ensure that
they will RTFM!

Does anyone know of a program that will give me statistics on files
access and other statistics through analyzing the "xferlog" file which

I was able to st up and use wu-ftp yesterday as an anonymous user. However,
when I try to connect as myself, I get access denied. Any ideas? I assume
it's the ftpaccess file. Mine looks like this:
class local real,guest,anonymous *.ov.com 0.0.0.0
class remote real,guest,anonymous *
limit local 20 Any /etc/msgs/msg.toomany
limit remote 20 Any /etc/msgs/msg.toomany

log transfers anonymous,real inbound,outbound
shutdown /etc/shutmsg
# all the following default to "yes" for everybody
delete no guest, anonymous # delete permission?
overwrite no guest, anonymous # overwrite permission?
rename no guest, anonymous # rename permission?
chmod no anonymous # chmod permission?

# specify the upload directory information

# path-filter...
path-filter anonymous /etc/pathmsg ^[-A-Za-z0-9_\.]*$ ^\. ^-

Do I need to add our network IP address after the *.ov.com??
Thanks a lot,

I had the same problem after installing wu-ftpd. In our case it was a
problem related to the /etc/shells file:
I use tcsh, which was twice to be found in the path! In passwd i had the
entry /usr/local/bin/tcsh, but in the /etc/shells file it was
/bin/tcsh and so wu-ftpd refused the commection (as warned in the doc's)
Hope this helps,
Juergen

The perl script xferstats incorrectly identifies internet addresses
whose host name begins with "inf" or which are only 2 components
wide (e.g., "bix.com") as unresolved.
This is because of two problems
1. perl's int($x) returns "Infinity" for any $x that begins with "inf",
and that evaluates as "> 0", resulting in hosts named "info" being
dumped into the "unresolved" bin thinking they are numeric IP
addresses.
2. The test for number of components in the address is off by 1, as
it checks the largest subscript in the address array rather than
the number of elements in that array. This causes two element
addresses like "bix.com" to be dumped in the "unresolved" bin.
Patch attached,

It appears that the fnmatch function as written in the support
library returns exactly the WRONG values as defined by the
manual page for the subroutine. It also appears that
the NOCASE option is an extension to the function not in the
POSIX spec.
Please let me know if I am reading this wrong. If not, I have
a bug to report and a fix already done.

I have built the WU ftp daemon version 2.4 on a Sun SS2 running Solaris
2.3, but am having problems using it. For anonymous logins, all commands
except 'LIST" work fine. 'LIST' gives the following:
----------8<----------
425 Can't build data connection: Connection refused.
----------8<----------
Hmmm, sounds like the Linux problem so far, except that 'LIST' doesn't work
no matter how many times you try it.
Could a Solaris guru or a wu-ftpd guru scratch their head and mutter
incantations and heal me? I'm DYING, and our anon ftp service is KAPUT!
So, I wheeled out 'truss' to take a look at the system calls 'ftpd' was
making. Hang on to your seat - here it is, starting from where I typed
"list" and ending with it sending the error message to the client:

The only hiccup looks like that ioctl which failed with EINVAL.
Real logins are fine. I have put all the necessary libraries in the
necessary places, but by the looks of it the ftp daemon isn't even trying
to run 'ls'
Please please please *please* help me - I'm stumped.
Thanks in advance -

I'm experiencing exactly the same problems with SCO ODT 3.0 and so far
I haven't been able to find the cause of the problem.

here's a listing of the relevant system dirs in ~ftp on my anon ftp
server (wuftp 2.4, solaris 2.3). It may assist you in determining
which files in /dev, /lib, and /etc are necessary.

I just downloaded wu-ftp-2.4.tar.Z from ftp.uu.net. I am trying to compile
this for a Sequent Symmetry 200 running ptx 2.1.1 When I try to compile it
I get the following error message - any ideas as to the problem????
Thanks
