Hello.
I have a question regarding recent messages.
When I open a folder other than INBOX, newly arrived messages are shown
as 'recent'. When I go back to this folder after visiting some other,
the previously mentionned messages are not recent anymore.
Why isn't the same behaviour with INBOX ? Recent messages in it keep
this state until I close my pine session. Opening other folders and
going back to INBOX does not clear the 'recent' status.
Any explanation ?
Thanks.
More info:
- pine 4.58,
- incoming-folders feature is on,
- all folders including INBOX are located on an UW-IMAP 2002e server,
using MBX format,
- deliveries are done on the server with procmail+dmail,

The INBOX is never closed during your Pine session. So there are no
messages that are New but not seen since the last session, since it's
the same session.

Shane,
You can use my "Fancy Thread Interface" patch. This patch enhances the
thread interface and it allows you (among other things) to do this. To
find the patch go to my web page, address below.

Larry,
For incoming folders you can press M S C and set:
incoming-startup-rule =
(*) first-recent
If you want to set this on a per folder basis, you should press M S R O
and set the folder and incoming-startup-rule to use.

Hi,
We have this peculiar problem for the Mailboxes of users
/var/spool/mail/username.
The mailboxes get corrupted asto the first 20-26 lines of mailbox get
DELETED.
I had gone through the doc on the pine site regarding the locking problme
over NFS. how can this problem be overcome.
Also we recently upgraded to pine-4.58, and on setting the
domain-name=req_domain ,the domain name was still the hostname, instead of
reqd_domain.
We are using 2.4.20-18.8.um.1 kernel on the (LVS Director) which exports
the mail partition to 30 NFS/NIS clients.
This mail is similar to one i posted on NFS lists.
Thanks
-shivaji

Nancy,
We will try to provide a feature to preserve state when snarfing in the
next version of pine. Thanks for the explanation.

One posibility is that you have disk quotas enabled, and users that bump
into that get the corruption because the file cannot be rewritten
correctly. Or, the disk volume is running out of room.

Hi,
We donot have any disk quotas enabled on the /var/spool/mail partition.
I did come to know from the docs on the site, that this kind of problem is
due to appending of the mailbox, even while pine is holding the mailbox
in NFS.
This problem is flaring and many users complain of this mailbox errors.
We had upgraded to pine4.58 now.
How would this problem be overcome.
thanks,

I don't have experience with Pine and NFS but I have been reading
the Pine discussion groups for years and I think the consensus is
"Don't do that!" It is much more robust to set up an IMAP server
and access those mailboxes via IMAP rather than using direct file
access. When you built Pine, the UW imap daemon was also built so
all you need to do is install it, turn it on, and change
inbox-path to something like:
inbox-path={your.imap.server/user=UID}INBOX
and with luck, the corruption problems will be solved.
Also, make sure that you read this FAQ
<
http://www.washington.edu/pine/faq/sysadmins.html#11.5>
which discusses the importance of /var/spool/mail having 1777
permission.
Hope this helps,
Nancy

Dear gurus,
I run pine 4.58 on FreeBSD 4.9.
When I try to access a user mailbox which is overquota, I receive
the following error message:
----------------------------
***********************************************************
* What follows is an advisory message. After reading it *
* simply hit "Return" to continue your Pine session. *
* *
* To review this message later, press 'J' from the *
* MAIN MENU. *
***********************************************************
Alert received while accessing "{host.domain}user.name": Alert
received while accessing "{host.domain}user.name"
----------------------------
Note the repeated text. It is not a cut-n-paste error.
I think that the problem is in the following piece of code from
imap.c:
else if(!strncmp(string, "[ALERT]", 7))
q_status_message2(SM_MODAL, 3, 3,
"Alert received while accessing \"%.200s\": %.200s",
(stream && stream->mailbox)
? stream->mailbox : "-no folder-",
rfc1522_decode((unsigned char *)tmp_20k_buf,
SIZEOF_20KBUF, string, NULL));
The problem is that tmp_20k_buf is used both by
rfc1522_decode to store the decoded alert message from server and by
q_status_message2 to sprintf the pine advisory message into.
May be other OS's do not experience the bug, as their sprintf behaves
differently.
To get rid of the error one may use the second half
of tmp_20k_buf to store decoded text:

Dear All,
while compiling in a custom patch for pine 4.58 on FreeBSD 4.9,
I have turned on warnings and noticed, that
1) utime function remains undeclared
2) when necessary files are included, compiler warns about
passing arg 2 of `utime' from incompatible pointer type
It seems to be caused by treating utime(3) according to
the following declaration:
#include <sys/types.h>
utime(file, timep)
char *file;
time_t timep[2];
and not the modern (POSIX) one
#include <sys/types.h>
#include <utime.h>
int utime(const char *filename, struct utimbuf *buf);
While the methods seem to be binary compatible (it was a warning message
only), why not to clean up the code a bit?
Sincerely, Michail

I hope I'm sending this message to the right place: I don't have my
address book with me here at this computer, or any recent messages from
the list on the mail server. Anyway, if it is, the following request:
I am trying to add as an incoming folder a pop3 server where I need to
check mail. This is under Pine 4.58 (Debian Sid - sshh! don't tell).
I've enabled incoming folders, and have 3 imap folders there working
without a hitch. Somehow the pop3 server is uncooperative. I've actually
run into this problem under Pine with this same server previously, but
adding the folder seemed to eventually work itself out after several
attempts (not sure how or why it finally worked - I assume the server must
operate in some strange way, since I didn't do anything differently when
it finally did work). So, I've been trying all day. In the folder list
window I hit "a", then type my.popserver.addy/user=myuname/pop3 when asked
"name of server to contain added folder." When asked "folder on
'my.popserver.addy' to add" I type "INBOX." Then I give it a name when
asked for "nickname for folder 'INBOX'". After hitting "return" after
this, I immediately get the message "Error checking for
{my.popserver.addy/user=myuname/pop3}INBOX". It's like it doesn't even go
to the mailserver to check, but just immediately gives that message.
Could it somehow be remembering a previously failed attempt, that perhaps
had some error in it, rather than checking again with the new values? Is
there some way in which I'm not entering values correctly? I've gone over
this many times today, and I can't have entered incorrect values
(according to the info I've been reading, e.g., at Infinite Ink) *every*
time. I entered those values carefully, using the model I found on that
website. I also compared it to .pinerc on another machine I have here
that successfully checks the pop3 server in question using Pine 4.21 (just
checked it earlier today with that machine). I just can't see how it
could be user error in this case. If I leave off "pop3" it does go to
check, but of course times out since it's requesting on port 143 and this
is a pop server.
Could anyone please help out with this problem?
Thanks, James

James,
You've found a bug!. The only way in which you can add this folder is by
editing the ".pinerc" file. You will have to add the definition under the
incoming-folders variable. Follow the pattern of the other imap folders to
add your pop3 folder. I have a patch if you want to try it too.

Hi,
Sorry for bothering you again.
As I am currently busy with my acads due to deadlines, i would appreciate
if my query relating to imap is satisfied.
Does having IMAP over mailboxes over NFS provide better locking as
compared to pine directly accessing mailboxes (w/o imap) on NFS clients.
Exporting the mails over NFS to 4 clients (load sharing servers) then
doing a imap only connection to these mailboxes, rather than directly accessing inboxes from
pine.
This would allow me to give a final thought on deciding to revoke the mail
partiton over NFS completely.
And making users re-enter passwd after login for accessing mails via
imap in pine.
eagerly waiting for ur reply.

I finally decided to just copy over relevant portions of the .pinerc file
from the working Pine/pop install I have. That solved the problem, along
similar lines you have suggested here. So, I guess I won't be needing the
patch. Thanks for your response.

Putting mailboxes on an NFS-mounted partition is bad in almost every
case. The exceptions are if there is only one client accessing the
mailbox across NFS (in which case why is it on NFS in the first place?)
or sometimes if you are running Solaris, where file locking across NFS
might occasionally work (with a modern NFS client that does the right
thing, and a modern NFS server that does too).
Too risky. Don't do it.
Or use Maildir (yuck) on NFS, but that's a whole 'nother can of worms.
Courier IMAP (yuck2) does Maildirs fine, but doesn't do IMAP very well.

Hi,
thanks.
Made up my mind now to have imap only access of mailboxes on the NIS/NFS
clients.
Is there anyway the user's doesnot have to re-enter the same login passwd
after being logged in to the system, to access his mailbox via imap in
pine.
Explaining this if i would have not made by point my clear.
Since we have users login into NIS/NFS clients and the pine therein would
be configured to have inbox over imap (as told by Nancy).
But then the user would have to re-enter his passwd to access his inbox.
It would be better if there is a soln or we can still live with the double
passwd's.
thanks
shivaji

Read about pre-authenticated IMAP sessions using rsh or ssh, or the
PASSFILE option.

I have seen the threads on this, and have set the "quell-ssl-largeblocks"
feature on 4.58 (running on WinXP Home), but I still get the error
message. Does this mean the feature is not behaving as hoped?
I know there is a Microsoft issue at the heart of this (from the prior
threads), but am curious still why other clients (Mozilla specifically)
seems to work? Also, is there any way to apply the alleged Win2k fix to
WinXP?
Thanks,
Bill

Subject: Extra checks on maildrivers

I know that the maildir maildriver is not officially supported, but I only
mention it because it pointed out some things in pine that I think can be
improved.
I've been experiencing crashes when TAB-ing to other folders to see new
messages. After some debugging here's what I found:
When TAB-ing to the next folder, mail_status() is invoked.
That function returns SAFE_STATUS (dtb,stream,mbx,flags);
SAFE_STATUS is #defined as (*dtb->status) (stream,mbx,flags)
and the maildir driver has this in its driver struct:
NIL, /* status of mailbox */
resulting in a call to a NULL function pointer.
I think that there are 2 reasons that this caused a problem at all.
1) The maildir driver does not implement the status function. This is
not really important for the people on this list I suppose, I'll take this
up with someone else.
2) Pine does not always check if the maildriver functions that it uses are
actually defined in the maildriver structure.
It does in the case of the subscribe function:
return factory ?
(factory->subscribe ?
(*factory->subscribe) (stream,mailbox) : sm_subscribe (mailbox)) : NIL;
But not in the case of status (and several other functions):
if (!dtb) return NIL; /* only if valid */
if (stream && ((dtb != stream->dtb) ||
((dtb->flags & DR_LOCAL) && strcmp (mbx,stream->mailbox) &&
strcmp (mbx,stream->original_mailbox))))
stream = NIL; /* stream not suitable */
return SAFE_STATUS (dtb,stream,mbx,flags);
I can imagine that maildrivers are _required_ to implement some functions,
but the least pine could do is check these function pointers _at_startup_
and give a decent error message if it's NIL, so maildriver programmers
know immediately what's wrong.
For all functions that are optional (i.e. the rest of them), pine should
check if they are implemented _before_using_them_.
Am I making sense? =]
Best regards,
Maurice van der Pot

Is there any way that I can have some attachments skipped in the display?
I know this is a strange request, but for some reason it bugs me to see
[ Part 2, Application/PKCS7-SIGNATURE 3.2KB. ]
[ Cannot display this part. Press "V" then "S" to save in a file. ]
in messages.. I guess because other attachments I actually care about (e.g.
attached files), and these ones I don't. Basically I guess I'd like to be
able to filter out the display of certain attachments (though when I go to
the view attachments screen, of course I'd want to see everything).

This depends on the spell check application, which is not part of
Pine. Pine just calles it.

Does anyone have any idea for a workaround for the following
situation?
I am starting to get bounces from a couple of addresses to which I
regularly send messages with no problems in the past. I think that the
respective providers have recently installed spam blockers which think
that I am spam. One of the reasons is possibly that the address I use
(
[email protected]) no longer matches the names for the various
servers at the provider (xxxxx.tiscali.nl: worldonline was bought by
tiscali a couple of years ago, but the worldonline.nl addresses are kept
active). If I change my sending address to
[email protected] mail seems to
go through with no problems, but I would like a different workaround if
possible, as I would like to keep the old email address.
Is there something I can add to the header in Pine to satisfy whatever
RCPT TO these spam checkers are looking for?
Both error messages follow:

Have you looked at <
http://www.spamcop.net/bl.shtml?195.241.76.186>? Is
195.241.76.186 a fixed address of yours or do you get is dynamically? In
the firs case you should check your system and scrutinize what you have
sent, in the latter case you should contact you ISP and report the problem
and require that you get a new IP address.

When you're doing spell-check, hit the letter 'a' (add) on a word which
comes up mis-spelled so it doesn't come up next time.

This has nothing to do with Pine. The problem is that your source IP
address (which appears to be 195.241.76.185, ha-smtp0.tiscali.nl) is
blacklisted. You'll need to talk to your ISP about this, since they are
the only ones who can fix the problem.
According to spamcop.net:
195.241.76.186 listed in bl.spamcop.net (127.0.0.2)
Since SpamCop started counting, this system has been reported about 40
times by about 20 users. It has been sending mail consistently for at
least 58.7 days. In the past 9.8 days, it has been listed 3 times for
a total of 2.5 days
In the past week, this system has:
* Been reported as a source of spam less than 10 times
* Been witnessed sending mail about 1890 times

What is a good spell check application ? I am having trouble compiling ispell in
Solaris 8. I followed all the suggestions in README about workarounds but still
failing to compile

I'm using aspell on Linux and MacOS X. I think it is pretty good. It
also has modes for e-mail, LaTeX, etc.

You can get antiword for Word documents, and set Pine up to pipe to it.
Don't know about Excel though.
If you're running PC-Pine you probably just want to be able to open the
files in Word/Excel directly (or the free viewers if you don't have
Office), that should be in the FAQ I reckon.
