If there was a legal way to do it, I wouldn't have bothered to make a
patch :-)

PINE is pretty aggressive about making sure the Sender: line is present
whenever it even *thinks* that it should be.

I guess this depends on where your INBOX gets its mail from. I connect
to an IMAP server via modem, and I also have a long wait; but thats the
dial-in process that takes its time to open the mailbox at the IMAP
server. Once I am connected, if I close pine and reopen it later,
the INBOX is there very quickly.

Sounds like a you are using rsh to connect to your server. Edit your
pinerc and make sure that you set

rsh-open-timeout=0

Hi,

I defined the different collection list, each one for the different news groups:

1)  Nickname:NEWS-SONY
   Server:news.sonytel.be/nntp
   Path:#news.
   View:

2)  Nickname  : News Wrocaw
   Server    : news.ict.pwr.wroc.pl/service=NNTP
   Path      : #news.
   View:

On the Collection List it looks like this:

   NEWS - SONY
       News groups on news.sonytel.be/nntp

   News Wrocaw
       News groups on news.ict.pwr.wroc.pl/service=NNTP

The problem is that if go into a 1) and add some news lists like this:

   sony.sysadm
   sony.utilities

then I add some news lists from 2) like:

   pl.rec.gry.komputerowe.sprzet

I should have the such entries in each Folder List for each collection:

           News groups on news.ict.pwr.wroc.pl/service=NNTP
------------------------------------------------------------------------

   pl.rec.gry.komputerowe.sprzet

                 News groups on news.sonytel.be/nntp
------------------------------------------------------------------------

   sony.sysadm
   sony.utilities

But in fact in each collection I have all entries (all 3 news lists). It causes
the usage of each news list because from the collection 1) I can't access to
the "pl.*" news lists, and from collection 2) - to the "sony.*" lists.

I think it should be separated because otherwise it mess up the things which
should be separated. Is there a way to set it correctly, to have each
collection consist with only the elements (news-list) which belongs to this
NNTP server?

Regards,
Murphy

Subject: new mail notification broken in readonly mode?
MIME-Version: 1.0
Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii
X-Listprocessor-Version: 8.1 -- ListProcessor(tm) by CREN

When I open pine in ReadOnly mode, I receive no
notification of new messages, and I must exit/restart
pine to see them (this is the pop3 behavior, iirc)

However, notification works fine when I start pine in
read/write mode.

I like readonly mode since it preserves flags
(netscape won't filter mail if I've already read it in
Pine).  Is there a way to get both readonly AND new
mail notification?

FYI:
I ssh to my mail server and read mail there.
My mail is stored in /var/mail/kbarr.
My inbox-path is   = <No Value Set: using "inbox">

I have also tried making an IMAP explicit (as the lack
of notification corresponds to the pop3 FAQ) by
setting inbox-path to {server.domain.com/imap}INBOX,
but that doesn't work in readonly either.

Is there a plan to implement a better/more robust reply system?

For example, I am on some mailing lists where the reply-to points to the
list, and sometimes want to reply to the poster, and vice versa.

I know mutt/emacs have this capability, but I like PINE

Is it possible that you (or your site) have the

 reply-always-uses-reply-to

I converted my old, 14MB mailx-style "mbox" to an imap folder in pine by

- getting the "current view" to be that large folder
- ; a (select all)
- a s (apply/save)
- type the name of the destination folder
- be prepared to wait

also, if want to, you can do an

- a d (apply/delete)

To delete the source messages.

Well yes, because otherwise it's pretty annoying to always have to confirm
it.

I want to be able to do something like

r       = reply
alt+r   = reply to sender
cntl+r  = reply to list
shift+r = reply to both

Hi there:  I have recently migrated my Pine from SUN/Solaris to a PC
running Redhat7.2.  It's gone pretty well, but I have two little things
which are bugging the hell out of me.  I've looked through all the
documentation I can find, but with no success.  I would appreciate very
much any advice anyone might have.  Both problems are to do with
"replying".

1) When I reply and include the text of the message, I would like it to
leave a couple of lines blank for my reply; currently it doesn't give me
any space at all.

2) When I "reply to all recipients", it includes me in the list of
recipients, which I don't want.

These are probably pretty simple things but very annoying ... many thanks

Terry Bridges
AAO Sydney

ps. I really should say that I think Pine is a marvellous email tool ...
and I had no idea it had so many features until I started poking around!

You can even sort it some while you are at it:

Create Rules that recognize pieces of mail in the
INBOX and move them to different mailboxes.

I frequently access my mail from multiple
computers simultaneously.  I use mbx format to
make sure that I don't have locking problems.

However, Pine doesn't appear to want to deal with
mbx addressbooks.  Any solutions?

If I want to specify the date: header explicitly
how do I do that?
Adding "date:" to custom headers does not appear
to work.

No way other than patching the source code

Nope, because Pine will re-write it regardless, and I think 'Date' is on
the 'banned headers' list anyway.

I'd suggest adding an X-Date: header if you really want to add the date,
but of course I'm guessing that won't do what you want to do... then again
I don't know why you want to do what you want to do.

Perhaps a more helpful approach would be to ask why you want to add the
date manually, and then I might be able to offer a better suggestion.

I like to sort my mail by date.
Dates in the future are effectively appointment
reminders.
I can write a script to mail me stuff with an
arbitrary date header.  I don't see why I
shouldn't be able to override Pine's date with my
own.

Sorry if this isn't the correct place to send this, but pico is packaged
with pine, and I couldn't find any mailing list specifically for pico.

This has been bothering me for about 2 years now.  When you press
Control-s in pico, the terminal freezes up.  You can't kill it with
control-c, control-d, control-z, or anything else that I could find.  You
have to switch to a new terminal and kill the job (and sometimes that
doesn't even restore the terminal).
This is particularly bad because in emacs, control-s is the command key
for searching.  So I often hit it accidently in pico, when I meant to do
control-w.
I hope that someone can fix this bug, and I'd be happy if someone could
tell me if there's a fix I could use to stop this from happening.

       hello,

I think that this is not a PICO problem, if you are using pine
within a UNIX/Linux terminal, CTRL S means to freeze the terminal,
so PICO has nothing to do here. To unlock it you just need to press
CTRL Q.

hope this will help you

Oh, you're right.  I hadn't known about control-q.

thanks!

What am I missing?  IMAP inherently supports accessing mail from
multiple sites simultaneously.

I don't know this part, about a shared addressbook.

A while ago (maybe over a year ago), I experimented with using
c-client MBX format for my remote address books and also could
not get it to work. I posted about my problem either here or in
comp.mail.pine and got a reply from the UW team saying that it
worked for them. I didn't pursue the problem and I don't have
time to do some experiments now. Here are some things that might
affect the situation.

* What is the default mailbox format on you IMAP server? If it is
Unix spool (mbox), then maybe that is part of the problem
(although it seems like it shouldn't be but that might be a
difference between our setups and the UW setup)

* How did you create the abook.cMBX (remote abook in cMBX
format)?

* How did you try to populate it with an address book?

* How did you set up Pine to access this abook? I recommend
directly editing the pinerc rather than using Pine's config
screens because I've had false error messages when using Pine's
config screens to set up a remote address book that already
exists on the server.

HTH,
Let us know if you figure anything out,
Nancy

In PC-Pine 4.44, if I use dialog boxes and type $ to sort, the
dialog box looks like this

( ) Arrival             ( ) From
( ) Subject             ( ) To
( ) Ordered Subject     ( ) Cc
( ) Size                ( ) Date
          [ ] Reverse Sort

Note that there is no option to sort by thread.

Also, it would be really great if there were a way to select the
radio buttons and check box using the keyboard, e.g., type Z to
select the siZe radio button.

Thanks,
Nancy

Hi Nancy,

This has been fixed in the next version (and sort by Score has been added
too).

I am running Pine v4.33 on Solaris 8.  While attempting to open certain
messages with (as of yet unopened) attachments, pine segmentation faults.
(Under csh this will leave the user with a frozen prompt, while under
tcsh the prompt is still usable.)

The messages have the following in common:
Most have been sent by the klez virus
Most have html attachments (all have attachments)
All appear to have come from a Windows machine

After sifting through the pine newsgroup I've found mention of html
attachments causing Pine v4.02 to seg fault.  Somebody also mentioned that
Microsoft doesn't always follow the Mime standard.

Knowing that Klez propagates through Mime encoded html attachments by
exploiting Microsoft Outlook, I'd like to know if Pine is still (as of
v4.33) vulnerable to html attachments.  Also, if Outlook is malforming
the Mime headers, could this cause v4.33 to crash?

Any help would be greatly appreciated,

Chris

Yes, like Nancy said, it does work for us. I'm wondering if you are able
to read the folder as a regular mail folder using pine. For example, you
do something like

Goto        {imap.server}remote_addressbook

and then look at the messages. Since a remote addressbook is a regular
mail folder that ought to work. Thanks.

This is the expected behavior with the traditional UNIX mailbox format
(and also MMDF format).  Pine does not lock the mailbox when it is
readonly (to allow some other process to open it readwrite), and as a
result Pine can't handle any changes to the mailbox.

You'll probably notice that if a readwrite process changes the mailbox a
readonly Pine session dies a horrid death.

Not in traditional UNIX mailbox format.

The alternative mbx format has a more advanced form of locking which
allows multiple sessions to interoperate, including readonly sessions.

I have messages sorted into a number of mailboxes (like, 30) on my server,
and I access them via IMAP.

PC-Pine handles this like a champ.  The only problem is telling which
mailboxes have unread messages in them.

Usually I log into my webmail program to see what mailboxes have unread
mail, but then I end up having to switch back and forth.

I thought about setting up a number of incoming mailboxes, but I'd hate to
have to poll all of them one at a time.

What do other people in this situation do?

Thanks
TjL

Hi,

I've setup a caching NNTP proxy (Delegate) to access various newsgroups,
e.g. msdnaa.general. This newsgroup contains more than 2000 articles,
which are never deleted, so I've read.

When I access the newsgroup with either Free Agent (Win95) or KNode
(Linux), there is some longer delay (about 15 seconds), but all article
headers are displayed.
Accessing the _same_ proxy (even simultaneously, thus, the active list is
not regenerated, but re-used by the proxy) both PC-Pine v4.44 (Win95) and
Pine v4.44 (Solaris 8) stall for over 300 seconds; eventually GPF
(PC-Pine) or telling me that the mail box has been closed due to access
error (Pine/Solaris), in which case all >2000 messages displayed with
empty header, zero size and marked deleted.

Also, switching between newsgroups via the TAB key is slow, very slow
compared to manually hopping to the next group using '<' <cursor_right>
<enter>.

Bye,

--

Steffen Kaiser

Is there any way to re-send a message that is already in sent-mail other than:
a. exporting it, editing it and then inserting it in a new message; or
B. using forward; or
c. using reply and including the text of the message.
I'd like to just be able to re-send something that didn't get a reply before.
C isn't too bad; you just have to do a little editing but wondered if
there was an easier way.
thanks.

You could always Bounce/Redirect the message.  Type B, then the address to
which you want to send it.

I recently configured my pine to use ldap queries implicitly ...

My ldap servers do not return the mail-host/domain with an email query,

so I get "john doe" <jdoe@missing-hostname>

Is there a way to get pine to use the 'user-domain' as it does with
queries out of the password file?

thanks!

There is a price for reading some of my messages.
I have posted on the Primedia board but this
board INTC is different. This is serious. This is
historic.
The following link pertains to the stock.
http://www.intel.com/ebusiness/news/sia.htm
Tomorrow.
The price is my opinion about the internet.
The computer industry should have bought up the
television and radio broadcasters.
-The radio stations have been packaged into
several companies but I am not familiar with the
companies.-
Instead the internet situation now is one of
legal limbo.
For posting purposes I think my opinion would be
against the internet, against Windows upgrades
and against open source software programming. But
that is just an off the record comment.
Maybe internet computers should have
indentification software!!
I once had an amateur radio license WB2VBQ. It
expired.

-I sent one here too.-

Hey pine-ers,

In general, it's good practice to encrypt replies to encrypted messages
you receive.  With pine, however, the only way that I know of to do that
is to remember that the message you're replying to is encrypted, and
then manually cycle your sending-filter to the appropriate one just
before sending.

Is there a better option, to ensure that I don't accidentally send out
an unencrypted reply (potentially containing sensitive quoted stuff) to
an email that was originally encrypted?  My instinct says "no", since
pine doesn't really know anything about encryption -- it just knows when
to invoke display filters and sending filters.

One option might be to have procmail add some headers to encrypted
messages, and then have pine notice those headers when replying and
automatically apply a sending filter.  I don't know of a way to convince
pine to do this, though.

Anything I've overlooked?  Have other people run against this problem at
all?  If so, how have you solved it (besides just training yourself to
be smarter ;)?

Thanks!

I am using both linux pine (RH 7.2 and 7.3) and pc-pine and my ISP is
going to change to smtp-auth soon. I searched the archives about my
problem, but found only the thread about yahoo!'s implemantation.
The mailhost offers me the following:
250-AUTH PLAIN LOGIN

But when trying to send mail, I receive
[>SECURITY PROBLEM: insecure server advertised AUTH=PLAIN<]

I tried disabling the other authentification modules like
#disable-these-authenticators=CRAM-MD5
#disable-these-authenticators=GSSAPI
#disable-these-authenticators=LOGIN

but still cannot send using AUTH=PLAIN.

Is there any documentation on that I haven't found yet ?

TIA,

Steffan Henke

This is just a warning.  The specification for the AUTH=PLAIN SASL
authentication mechanism indicates that it is only allowed in encrypted
(SSL or TLS) sessions, because bad guys can snoop on your password.

If you are getting an error message saying "SMTP Authentication
cancelled", the actual problem has nothing to do with that warning, but is
instead a bug in that server.

An unsupported patch to qmail which implements SMTP-SASL has a known bug
that renders it non-compliant with the specification (RFC 2554, RFC 2222).

The qmail developers have asked me to emphasize that this is *not* a bug
in qmail, but rather in an unsupported patch that they have nothing to do
with.

The unsupported patch to qmail issues an erroneous response which causes
the authentication to be cancelled.  This problem will affect AUTH=GSSAPI
and AUTH=PLAIN, but will not affect AUTH=CRAM-MD5 or AUTH=LOGIN.

Supposedly, the author of the unsupported patch has issued an update which
will fix this.
