Hi,

I perhaps found some limits of NeTraMet. But what is more likely I write
bad rule files ;)

'All' I want to do is collect traffic per IP address. To simplify the
post processing I assign each IP address a FlowKind. The 'Format' statement
then just contains: FlowKind toPDUs toOctets fromPDUs fromOctet.

With this kind of collection I spotted to problems:

1st: the FlowKind attribute is 16bit (I guessed from the mask 255.0). But
even after changing the mask to 255.255 NeTraMet provided just the 8bit
value. Therefor I can only distinguish 256 IP addresses or 'customers' if
I assign several IP addresses one FlowKind.

2nd: NeTraMet refuses to work wiht more then 656 jump addresses.
The error message is as follows:

webfarm.rules 1040: g209:
More than 656 symbols !!!

I tried to avoid the jump addresses, it worked (the collector started
running again), but then the flowKind is
not distinguished properly anymore !

Has anyone an idea how to exceed the flowkind limit ?
Is the there a -similar- simple way to collect IP based data or do I have
to use the triple (starttime, ruleset, flowindex) ?

Thanks in advance.
Cheers,
R"udiger.

P.S.: I attached a snippet of my rulefile for better understanding.

We have done some tests on NeTraMet; we tested our own local version of
NeTraMet 4.1 (in particular NetFlowMet, NeMaC and fd_filter) on Solaris 2.6
with no problems (none of our changes affect the date handling, so the Y2K
tests should be applicable to stock NeTraMet 4.1)

You can change the symbol limit by altering MXSYMBOLS in nmc.h (we have
rulesets currently in service with around 5000 symbols).

Nevil,

I have downloaded a run-time version of Netramet 4.2 for linux and I am
having some problems.

The command I use to start the meter is:

       /root/autoconf/meter/NeTraMet -w private -k aks3 &

aks3 is the name of host that I am running the meter & the manager on & it
exists in the hosts file.

2 errors occur when I run the Manager.

For the following command :

       ./NeMaC -c20 -v aks3 private

I get the error Community private doesn't have write access to meter aks3.
This is despite the fact that I can do an snmpset command successfully using
this communicty name "private".

Why is it that NeMaC can not use this cummunity name ?

The second error I get when I run the following command :

       /NeMaC -c20 -v -r rules.default aks3 private

No SET statement in rule files rules.default. The rules.default was supplied
with the distribution so I can not understand why it is not correct. - &
there is a SET 1 command in file file.

I am running version 4.2 of the software on Linux 2.0.34.

I have also tried to compile the software but I appear to be missing
libraries under the directory Xm ie Xm/Xm.h etc. Does anyone know what
package I should install to these libraries.

Hope someone can help

Regards

Adam

Hi again.

Thanks for the tip with the MXSYMBOLS in nmc.h it worked. Though the
Symbol problem is solved I still have problems extending the FlowKind to
16bit (or more).

Has anyone extended the FlowKind (or any of the other *Kind, *Class)
variables to 16 bit ?
I took a look at the sourcecode, I did find some things but it did not
work.

Any help appreciated.

As I was chaching the MXSYMBOLS I also (or at least tried to) changed some
values for the FlowKind variable. In line 248 in nmc.h I changed the
FlowKind variable to be a unsigned short(16bit) instead of an unsigned
char(8bit) in the flow_info struct. Then in line 541 I changed the byte
number to '2' for the FlowKind.

Then comes the point where I am not quite sure. Beginning from line 625
the size of an an object (I think for getting the snmp-blob) is
calculated. So I guess I have to add here (at least) another byte.
Then in the nmc_pars.c file at line 1033 FlowKind (as a dereferenced
pointer) is assigned the return value of getnbr(255). I don't know what
the function does ?!

Well the collector still runs but I still do not get any values greater
than 255. I am not sure if I have to adjust some output functions as well
or how to change the rulefile to take FlowKind as a 16bit value ?

Netflow is not supported on the 1005 under IOS 12

It is apparently planned for 12.3 but not yet released.

The 2600 is the lowest spec Cisco that supports netflow today.

Bounced message, forwarded to list.

PLEASE NOTE:  Although 4.2 is still the current vserion of NeTraMet,
the 4.3b10 version (in beta-releases on the ftp sites) is ready
for production, and is much simpler to install.

I recommend that you should install 4.3b10 rather than any of the 4.2 (or
earlier) versions.

Cheers, Nevil

PS: I'm making (slow) progress of the 4.3 documentation, the 4.3 release
will be out real soon now!

Hello Adam:

I tried using Netramet 4.2 on Linux and experienced the SET statement
problem you outlined below. Instead I downloaded Netramet 4.3 beta - this
worked without any difficulties.

I needed to install some X-windows packages to get hold of the required
libraries. These turned out to be the lesstif libraries. These are available
as a Red Hat RMP (lesstif-0.86.5-1TL.i386.rpm for example). Nifty wouldn't
run unless these files were installed. I also needed to download the lesstif
compile-time libraries for the C-compiler. I found these at various internet
sites dedicated to Red Hat RPMs. Just do a search for lesstif. The
X-components are only needed for Nifty - if you don't need Nifty you don't
need the libraries.

I can't help you on the first problem.

Good Luck.

Subject: NetraMet

Regards

Adam

Simply download the lesstif RPMs from some Redhat RPM archive website and
install them - you need the run time libraries and the compile time
libraries. Then execute the makefiles that are supplied with the Netramet
distribution. I used the Netramet 4.3 distribution.

I have previously had great success using NeTraMet43b9 on Solaris 2.5.1 .
Due to hacker attempts we are standardizing our platform software to
Solaris 2.6. So Naturally I have begun the process of moving NeTraMet over
also. Using the older NeTraMet43b9 tar ball I get errors during the compile.

I have the following questions;

If I compile the newer beta NeTraMet43b10 will the NeTraMet43b10 Meter have
any known difficulties communicating with the NeTraMet43b9 NeMaC?

Does anyone have any positive or negative feedback about using Solaris 2.6
for NeTraMet?

What kind of compile errors? if you're using gcc and don't have
Sun's C compiler, a shortcoming in the configure script appears
because of checking for gcc after doing the SIZEOF_LONG check
(it's easy to workaround; let me know if you need it).

I've used 43b9 successfully on Solaris 2.6

No.  The main difference between b9 and b10 was the implementation of
IPv6, which didn't require any changes to the interface between meter
and manager.

We've been using Solaris 2.7 here for some months now, without any
problems.

Cheers, Nevil
