Hello all:

Mark Newman posted a note recently pointing out that NeTraMet doesn't
do anything about overflowing counters for flows.  He commented:

> This goes against a basic assumption I've had about the netramet meter.
>  I assumed that the meter would start a new flow when the counter
> overflowed or came close to overflowing.  Has anyone run into this
> problem before?  And how can I prevent this from happening again (or at
> least minimize the damage).

In reply,

* The counters are SNMPv1 COUNTER variables, which means they're
supposed to wrap, and be read often enough that this isn't a problem.
This doesn't help much, but it's the reason NeTraMet didn't do
anything to flag counter overflows.  Counter overflow is a general
  problem in SNMPv1.

* The RTFM meter MIB (now RFC 2064) and earlier draft versions, allowed
for flows to have a scale factor, which specifies the number of bits
a counter value should be shifted left.  This seemed like a good
idea, but it's not easy to implement.

* The next version of the meter MIB will be an SNMPv2 one (I'm testing
NeTraMet version 4.1 now, I expect to release it about May this year).
This will use 64-bit counters, which will reduce the frequency of
  counter overflows.

Cheers, Nevil

I thought I'd posted this note yesterday,  but (as several

Apologies again, Nevil

What an interesting idea!  The short answer to your questions is
"I don't know of anyone working on it right now."  As for ideas:

* It's certainly something the RTFM working group can consider for
their 'new attributes' document, but it's not at all clear to me
how this kind of thing could fit into the current RTFM architecture.

* It shouldn't be difficult to write a program to watch for RSVP
packets, and build a rule set to meter them.  Getting the new
rule file downloaded to the meter could either be done by this
program.  Alternatively this program could be a component used in
a Perl script which ran a loop to download the current version of the
rule set, wait for a new (RSVP-initiated) rule set, download it, etc.
[If I understand it correctly, RSVP streams are one-way, so you'll
need to watch for IP address:port pairs in both directions.]

* As a much simpler approach - to get started - can you just make a
list of the IP addresses and ports which will be taking part in an
RSVP test, and make a single rule file to meter those?  If nothing
else, this would let you develop your ideas on what parameters of the
flows you want (or are able to) measure.

Cheers, Nevil

Oops!  test.c was a test program for checking the fddi interface code.
It's not neccessary for NeTraMet operation.  I should have deleted the
lines which build it from the sun Makefile.

If you want to build it, it does indeed have syntax errors.  Just move
the declaration lines for main() ahead of the first executable
statement.

Hi,

just a short success report -- In lack of Motif for Linux, I tried to
compile "nifty" with "lesstif", a Motif Compatible Library which is
distributed under the GNU General Public License.

It seems to work fine. It does not work with lesstif-0.50, but works with
Version 0.75, which is available from RedHat.

Cheers,
Siegfried

Firstly, I apologise to those people who are on both of these lists and
I'm sure there are a few of you.

Secondly, I apologise if this message rambles a bit but I have filled in
a fair bit of background so readers understand the scope of our
problem.  Well here goes......

QUESTNet is the QUeensland Education Science and Technology Network.
It's members are the 9 Universities in Queensland and Northern NSW, the
Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation(QLD divisions)
and the Australian Institute of Marine Science.  There are also a handful
of associates who connect via the above members.  We are also known as
the Queensland Regional Network Organisation (QRNO).  Each of the state's
RNOs has one link into AARNet's service provider, currently Telstra Internet.

Currently we measure traffic per institution, using a system of two
NetraMet meters.    One measures traffic to and from our QUESTNet-wide
proxy servers and the other measures all other traffic on an ethernet
segment just prior to our Telstra link.  See the picture below.
Router 1 is a Cisco 7000 and is the point at which Member institutions
connect.  Router 2 is a Cisco 7505.  The link to Telstra is currently a
fairly highly utilized link of almost 10MB.  Traffic figures currently
being measured can be viewed at www.questnet.net.au/traffic.

   -----      -----
   |a/c|      |   |Proxy
   |   |      |   |

     |          |
     |          |

         |

       |R1 |                 |R2 | /
       |   |                 |   |/
       -----                 -----
         |                     |
         |                     |
       ================================
               |
               |
             -----
             |a/c|
             |   |
             -----

Most of the member institutions are also measuring traffic in more
detail, say to subnet or maybe IP level on their networks, using various
techniques (NeTraMet, NNStat and Cisco Routers).  However, there is a
need, particularly in the Universities, to recover Internet costs from at
least individual cost centres such as departments and in some cases
individuals.   QUESTNet has formed a working party to address this issue
on a regional basis so as to avoid duplication of effort and to determine
what can be achived on a regional level and what needs to be done at an
institution level.    Several guidelines have been set for this Working
Party and among these is the ability to bill back to the individual if
required.  After some discussions it appears that this is only feasible
if traffic statistics are measured to the individual IP level.

What I am trying to determine is whether it is feasible to do this at a
regional level and if so what sort of hardware would be required.  In
particular could NeTraMet handle this and if so on what platform and with
how much power?

The Universities between them have 8 "B" Class Networks and approximately
34 "C" Class Addresses.  I would estimate that between 50-75% of these
are currently in use and being routed to Telstra Internet.  There are
also several networks in use from the "Private" range.  These will need
to be considered for measuring proxy traffic.

CSIRO have 2 "B" classes routed through QRNO and AIMS have one.  I am not
sure of the utilization of these networks.  Our associates also have at
least one "B" class and a number of "C" Class networks.

While at this stage only the 6 Public Universities have a requirement for
such detail any solution should be able to expand to meet the other
members.

I would appreciate any ideas on the feasibility of measuring this amount
of traffic to this many IP addresses.  We realise that measuring to
individual IP addresses is only the start (for example issues of Central
Services and actually how to bill will also need to be addressed) so if
anyone has any ideas or advice along those lines they would also be very
much appreciated.

Many thanks in advance.  Replies might be better sent to me rather than
the list but if enough people are interested I'll post a summary to the list.

Cheers,

       Kate Myatt

A pentium machine with 1G harddisk space and 16 Mb ram
would be sufficient. The actual pc collecting the stats would required a
larger harddisk space

I am running NeTraMet over a PC and NeMaC over a SunO2 workstation

c:\...\netramet -w testw -r testr
 ./nemac -c120 -r rules.ipport (my_IP_addr) testw

However it seems nemac can'nt establish a communication with
netramet. A while after it starts running, the following message appears in
the screen:
NeMaC: NeTraMet Manager & Controller V3.2
  Using MIB file: mib.txt
Couldn't get meter info from (my_IP_addr)!
Does community testw have read or write access to the meter?
  No meters to monitor !!!

I don't know whether nemac is not able to reach netramet or if it
does, whether it cann't write the LastCollectTime variable.
One more thing. How does Nemac knows which is the read community name
(in this case 'testr')?

Thanks in advance,

 Jesus Redondo
