MIPS est l'abr�viation de Millions d'Instructions Par Sec�
onde. C'est une fa�on de mesurer la vitesse de traitement
d'un programme par un microprocesseur. Comme la plupart des
unit�s de ce type, on l'utilise le plus souvent abusivement
(il est tr�s difficile de comparer correctement les vitesses
exprim�es en MIPS de diff�rents types de microprocesseurs).
Les BogoMips sont une invention de Linus. Le noyau (ou peut-�tre un
pilote de p�riph�riques ?) a besoin d'une boucle d'attente (le temps
d'attente est trop court ou requiert une trop grande pr�cision pour
utiliser une autre m�thode qu'une attente active) qu'il est n�cessaire
de calibrer en fonction de la vitesse du processeur sur lequel Linux
s'ex�cute. Ainsi le noyau mesure lors du d�marrage la vitesse
d'ex�cution d'une boucle d'instructions d�termin�e. _B_o_g_o vient de
l'am�ricain _b_o_g_u_s, qui signifie faux, bidon. Une vitesse en BogoMips
donne donc une indication de la vitesse d'un microprocesseur, mais
l'unit� est d�finie trop peu scientifiquement pour que l'on puisse
l'appeler autrement qu'un BogoMips.
Les raisons (il y en a deux) pour lesquelles la mesure de cette
vitesse est affich�e lors du d�marrage du noyau sont :
� cela peut servir pour le d�bogage et pour v�rifier que le cache et
le bouton turbo d'une machine sont bien actifs ;
� Linus ne se lasse pas de lire les messages de gens paniqu�s � ce
propos dans les _N_e_w_s.
L'algorithme C qui calcule le nombre de BogoMips se trouve dans le
fichier source /usr/src/linux/init/main.c, et c'est la variable du
noyau associ�e loops_per_sec (_b_o_u_c_l_e_s _p_a_r _s_e_c_o_n_d_e) qui est utilis�e
par de nombreux pilotes pour des besoins plus concrets. La fonction
d'attente � proprement parler udelay() est en assembleur, c'est
pourquoi chaque portage en a sa propre d�finition dans
/include/asm/delay.h. La variable loops_per_sec et la fonction
udelay() sont utilis�s dans de nombreux drivers, regarder :

Nous remarquerons que la boucle de d�termination de la vitesse en
BogoMips n'est pas optimis�e pour le parall�lisme des diff�rents
processeurs comme le Pentium d'Intel ou l'Alpha 21164.
Nous remarquerons aussi que cette boucle pour des processeurs autres
que ceux d'Intel est similaire mais pas identique.

Il y a trois fa�ons de conna�tre la vitesse effective en BogoMips de
votre syst�me Linux :
1. en regardant dans /proc/cpuinfo, par exemple par
2. en regardant la sortie syslog pour relire ce qui a �t� affich� lors
du d�marrage (en r�cup�rant l'information avec dmesg ou syslogk) ;
3. en utilisant le programme de calcul de BogoMips ind�pendant.
La derni�re possibilit�, �galement applicable pour des syst�mes non-
Linux, comme des Crays et d'autres, est d'utiliser le programme
ind�pendant BogoMips. Tir� du fichier readme (lisez-moi) accompagnant

Ras le bal d'avoir � rebooter votre syst�me juste pour
savoir combien de BogoMips il atteint aujourd'hui ? [...]
"Bogomips" est un programme ind�pendant qui affiche les per�
formances de votre syst�me bas� sur l'un des benchmarks les
plus utilis�s au monde. Il ex�cute le m�me code que celui
utilis� lors du d�marrage du noyau Linux, mais est
disponible comme un programme utilisateur. [...] La version
1.3 de BogoMips est maintenant portable et devrait fonction�
ner sur tout syst�me qui dispose du compilateur et des
librairies ANSI C.
Remarquons que, du fait de la charge du syst�me, les valeurs calcul�es
par le programme _B_o_g_o_M_i_p_s peuvent �tre inf�rieures � celles que vous
trouverez plus loin. Cela est d� au fait que la version ind�pendante
ne peut donner exactement la m�me information qu'au d�marrage, car les
autres processus actifs seront en comp�tition avec ce programme, lanc�
par un utilisateur ordinaire, pour l'obtention des ressources syst�me.
C'est pourquoi seuls les scores en BogoMips affich�s au boot sont
report�s plus loin.
Soyez conscient que le fichier
sunsite.unc.edu:/pub/Linux/system/status/bogo-1.2.tar.gz/ qui contient
la derni�re version 1.3 (sic), est relativement obsol�te.

variations observ�es dans comp.os.linux.development, le 28 avril 1994.
La boucle de calcul des BogoMips est quantifi�e, et l'on
obtient donc g�n�ralement le m�me nombre chaque fois. On
obtiendra des valeurs diff�rentes si la vitesse calcul�e est
� la limite d'un intervalle de quantification, et qu'il y a
de petites variations (diff�rences dans le temps de traite�
ment des interruptions), provoquant le passage d'une valeur
� une autre.
Si un noyau n'est pas compil� de fa�on sp�cifique pour un processeur
donn�, alors des variations (parfois grandes) des scores en BogoMips
peuvent appara�tre, principalement en raison d'erreurs d'alignement.
Ce probl�me ne survient apparemment que sur les diff�rents processeurs
x86 (Intel et clones). Heureusement, il peut facilement �tre r�solu :
recompiler le noyau sp�cifiquement pour votre processeur.
L'algorithme BogoMips, contrairement � ce que beaucoup de monde croit,
ne change pas de fa�on significative selon les diff�rentes versions du
noyau.

Pourquoi la boucle de calibrage �choue-t-elle ?
Elle n'a pas �chou�. Si elle avait �chou�, vous auriez eu le message
suivant :

En revanche, c'est l'initialisation du pilote d'un gadget que vous
n'avez pas sur votre machine qui est susceptible d'avoir �chou�. Juste
apr�s le calcul du nombre de BogoMips, les diff�rents pilotes sont
initialis�s. Tout �chec est b�tement indiqu�. Un exemple classique est
celui du pilote de l'AHA152x. Les autres sympt�mes d'�chec de pilotes
(et non d'�chec dans le calcul des BogoMips) sont des plantages
syst�me, des attentes longues ou des blocages complets du syst�me.
Depuis Linux 1.2, les messages d'erreurs ont �t� largement am�lior�s.
Mettez � jour votre syst�me avec au moins cette version pour
d�terminer quel est le pilote qui plante.
77.. �� pprrooppooss ddeess pprroocceesssseeuurrss cclloonneess ((CCyyrriixx,, NNeexxGGeenn,, AAMMDD,, eettcc..))
Les processeurs Cyrix du type 486 n�cessitent un programme
d'activation du cache, appel� quelquefois programme BogoBoost. On peut
radicalement am�liorer le nombre de BogoMips des processeurs Cyrix
5x86 et 6x86 en utilisant la pr�diction de branchement (option du
BIOS). Cette am�lioration est parfois relativement faible. Il existe
plusieurs paquetages permettant d'ajuster les processeurs Cyrix, comme
le correcteur (_p_a_t_c_h) BogoBoost, cx5x86mod et set6x86, tous
disponibles dans les archives habituelles. Certains indiquent que l'on
obtient de meilleures performances avec les Cyrix 6x86 quand le noyau
est compil� avec une optimisation pour 486 plut�t qu'une optimisation
pour Pentium.
Les performances des processeurs NexGen 386 am�lior�s, r�f�renc�s
Nx586, sont donn�es avec celles des 386, car le fait qu'ils
fonctionnent comme des Pentium est sans incidence sur le mode de
calcul des BogoMips.
Les AMD 5x86, aussi r�f�renc�s sous le nom AMD 486DX5, sont des 486/33
quadrupl�s. Ils sont donc recens�s avec les autres 486. Les AMD K5 et
K6 sont des processeurs de type Pentium, avec leurs constantes propres
pour la d�termination du nombre de BogoMips.
88.. PPoouurrqquuooii ssee pprr��ooccccuuppeerr ddeess BBooggooMMiippss ??
Pr�cisons qu'il n'y a que deux raisons de faire attention au nombre de
BogoMips annonc� lors du d�marrage de Linux :
1. Pour v�rifier qu'il correspond bien � ce que l'on peut attendre du
processeur de la machine, de sa fr�quence d'horloge et d'un
�ventuel cache. De nombreux processeurs sont sujets � des erreurs
de configuration de
� la configuration de la m�moire cache (write-back est mauvais pour
les BogoMips, donne souvent moins de 5; write-through est bien)
� les boutons-turbo (doivent �tre activ�s)
� un BIOS qui �mule un faux cache (remplacer le cache par du vrai)
� d'autres probl�mes du genre li�s au cache et � la fr�quence
2. Pour voir si votre syst�me est plus rapide que le mien. Bien s�r,
c'est absolument faux, inutilisable, non-fond� et surtout inutile,
mais toutes les mesures de performances subissent le m�me probl�me.
Alors pourquoi ne pas l'utiliser ? C'est une b�tise inh�rente qui
n'a jamais emp�ch� les gens d'utiliser des indices de performances,
n'est-ce pas ? :-)

Le tableau suivant donne des mesures de vitesse en BogoMips pour
diff�rents syst�mes (plus de 1000 entr�es par plus de 800 personnes
diff�rentes provenant de pr�s de 50 pays). Notez que les valeurs
indiqu�es ici sont celles obtenues lors du d�marrage, sauf pour la
section portant sur les syst�mes autres que Linux.
