CURRENT_MEETING_REPORT_
Reported by Chris Weider/Bunyip Information Systems
Minutes of the Integrated Directory Services Working Group (IDS)
Administrivia
There were no additions to the agenda, and the minutes from the previous
meeting were accepted without changes.
Liaison Reports
WNILS is wrapping up since the WHOIS++ protocol has undergone a final
revision and is ready to be put on the standards track. LDAP is going
to Draft Standard; there are some possible extensions for a follow-on
document. The NADF is continuing its piloting activities.
RFC 1292 Progress
A revision to RFC 1292 has been published as an Internet-Draft, ``A
Revised Catalog of Available X.500 Implementations.'' There was some
concern that many of the RFCs referenced in the document are not
Proposed Standards, and that this needs to be reflected in the document.
Document on Privacy Law in the US
Sri Sataluri has offered to co-author Barbara Jenning's document on
privacy law in the US. General comments were that the paper should serve
just as an overview of the existing law, and that a new paper, a ``Code
of Conduct for Directory Services on the Internet'' needs to be created.
This new paper would mesh well with the papers Erik Huizer has been
putting together (``Privacy Laws in European Directories'' and
``Overview of Data Protection Policies''). The IETF and ISOC should
work together on this paper, and perhaps the help of the EFF should be
enlisted. Authors for this new paper include Tony Genovese, Barbara
Jennings, Simon Spero, Katy Treca and Julia Hill. The address for
prospective authors is
[email protected].
Overview of Directory Services Document
Marco Hernandez's ``Overview of Directory Services'' document may be
similar to other documents in the UK; that will be investigated. The
User Services Area Directorate would like to review the document when it
is finished.
WHOIS++ Implementation Catalog
Chris Weider apologized for the tardiness of the WHOIS++ implementation
catalog, and promised to have something out by the end of May.
X.500 Pilot Project Catalog
The Paradise pilot's ``projects catalog'' will be released as an RFC.
Linda Millington and Allan Cargille will take responsibility for this
task.
White Pages Services BOF
It was decided in the Framework for White Pages Service in the Internet
BOF (PAGES) that three groups were needed: an indexing services group,
a policy group, and a protocols group. The indexing group has yet to be
formed; IDS (or its successor, see below) will serve as the policy
group; and the proposed Access/Synchronization of the Internet
Directories Working Group (ASID), chaired by Tim Howes, will be the
protocol group.
Charter Revisions
A new IDS group will deal with data management, policy, legal issues,
protocol independent issues, and quality issues. The group will not
deal with operational issues. IDS, or a group like it, would be the
right group. As both of the current chairs of IDS expressed a wish to
step down, they will produce a draft charter for the new group, and IDS
will conclude to be replaced by a new group.
